Just moved to the Seattle area, Eastside to be exact.. and I noticed one random thing: Soft drinks are really expensive here. Even when compared to San Francisco, CA. Is there some sort of built in 'Sin Tax' that has driven it up?

Yea if you thought that soft drinks are expensive now just wait till the new legislation is in effect. We also pay top dollar for gas I think 57 cents goes to tax

Taxes on unhealthy products, or products that we need to consume less of (gas), are great so long as the money is going towards the effects of the consumption being taxed; what are the chances of that?

The prices are high because people are willing to pay those prices to buy the products.

I'm not. I'll have to curb my smoking habit. I'll be damned if I'm going to pay $8 for smokes.

Groceries in general are more expensive in Seattle, not just soft drinks.

True, but most groceries don't seem that much more expensive compared to the differences in soda prices. 3 dollars for a 12 pack was the regular price we'd pay in Mid-Missouri. When prices shot up they would hit 4.00. Here they are a low of 5.00 (non sale) and I've seen brand name soda hit 6.99 for a 12 pack. 6.99 used to buy us a 24 pack, not on sale.

This is all in Tacoma too, haven't bought anything in Seattle in awhile. Certainly not soda, so maybe it is even higher there.

The main ingredient (high fructose corn syrup) used to make American sodas and candies is heavily subsidized by the federal government.
