I live on a quiet, semi-rural dead-end street on a very large fenced lot. It is well-lit by the township, but quiet and I have no immediate neighbors.
Sounds game for a rifle to me. Shotguns are good for apartments and suburbs, which she is not in.

And could you specify rounds that are specifically manufactured to injure and not kill.... perhaps the anti gun libs will get on board if manufacturers start touting "our rounds dont kill, we design them to injure"...... please.
Basic ballistics. Some rounds are designed to wound or incapacitate by creating smaller wound channels (like the 5.56), the idea behind them was you can wound an enemy soldier and force one or two of his comrades to cart him off, thus technically removing two or three combatants from the field with one injury.

Others are larger, heavier, and designed to kill via larger wound cavitation and subsequent blood loss(like the 7.62).

You dont need an AK47 or AR10/AR15 to defend your home, not very practical for the average guy looking to get a weapon to protect his family.
I'd trust my life with an AK because the odds of a jam or misfire are almost 0. A shotgun is fine for an apartment or suburbs, but in a rural situation I'd definitely want the reliability and lethality of the AK as opposed to a 12ga shotgun.

Plus I'd rather not worry about a pump mechanism in case my enemies shoot back or I miss, too much adrenaline. best to just have a trigger to pull.

Plus if they have you pinned down, a RPK 75 round drum comes in handy! AK-47 75-Round Drum Magazine Romanian-Wind Up

This is drifting to be SHTF, no longer SD. SD more or less may begin with a pistol and end with a shot gun. After that it's SHTF, and every man for himself ain't it?

In SHTF it starts with a rifle and may end with a pistol if you live so long.
