Hmmm, this is gonna be tuff. A woman and my holster

The holster is hand made by me, and is supposed to resemble a belt loop, and it does match my belt, but is across on my right instead. Being a dead match was pretty easy since my belt is black, so all I had to do was copy the belt look from worn out engineer boots that were black already, and the rest of the holster is made of as well.

For a 'deep concealment' as this holster is intended, but seldom used as,it should hold the holster, some place else inside my pants!

Umm, these days only a TSA agent would find it, but then that TSA agent would either need new front teeth or be dead. I consider that sort of 'test' assault, and considering the possible damge with deadly intent. Just the way it is. Last on this holster, is it lives in my jeans pocket, and I don't wear other kinds of pants much, and they have like jeans pockets, which get filled with saw dust chips, metal chips and grunge, so this holster is snug, and sewn closed at the muzzel end.

My primary use of it is back up, and I just don't see any reason a women can't deal with a .45. If 98lbs pound Kate can, any woman can, and that's my story and I'm stickin to it

Anyone new, male or female should handle what ever their SD weapon is every day. At that time it probably should be un-loaded with real ammo, and have 'Snap Caps' installed. 6 for a wheel gun and 2, possiblly more for a semi auto loader, so the hammer can be safely used, for trigger pull practice and just getting to be familar with the feel and function.

Most guns are the first digtal device man ever made, you press the key just once

Oh yeah, A blade lives in my Balmora Scot War Bonnet. It's about 2 inches over all, but it slices 9/16" elk neck like the elk was made of hot butter. This type of hat is a War Bonnet, since it is topped off with the most foolish looking pom pom. That pom pom is gamdamteed to start a war any time I wear it I made that too.

I agree Mac. I've seen 5 and 6 year old kids shoot a .38 and a .45! Guess who? LOL LOL Something else the smart man Mac brought up is a knife! Lot's of firearm folks laugh at a knife. What's so funny about a knife and a gun (or two or three) of each? That knife, might just be the ticket to slash someones arm to get them to release you from a grapple or choke-hold. Employed correctly, you retain your handgun with your strong hand as that is priority #1. The last thing you want is to be shot with your own gun! While doing that, you reach into your pocket where you have a modern assisted opening TACTICAL knife and retrieve it. One push/flip of the thumb and you slash the b@stards arm open with it! Blood is pouring out and when he sees what damage you have just created, he turns you loose immediately more than likely. Most people don't like getting cut and seeing a huge gaping wound pouring blood. This usually buys you a few seconds to draw your weapon and fire if he doesn't run off first. Not so dumb now, is it? Modern tactical knives galore out there folks. Something like this will do nicely!

Axel the problem is autos, switch blades and spring assist are all righty knives so far as I would know. NH recently saw fit to allow common man to own any kinds of knives he wants, to include autos' and switch blades which are slowly appearing in stores that sell knives.

That hat is a tool. 1 it keeps my head warmer. 2 it contains linen thread, other thread would do for other peps' but I must have real linen, so of course it has needles and brass fish hooks. There is hand made by me piece of 'Trade Silver' made of sterling, and worth no less than 45 bucks at the 1990 rate, so it has wearable money for anyone willing to trade silver for some useful object I come up missing. Plus that knife, which is used for leather cutting and sewwing more than anything else.

So far the only blood it has drawn is mine On a bad day I would use it with the hat, the hat actting as a guard. It's better as a hand guard than a cotton ball.

I own several kinds of knives, mostly for Fur Trade re-enactments, but they get other uses too, when the right jobs come along. Many of these i made or fixed to be my way.

Smith & Wesson and Kershaw assisted knifes are ambidextrous. The liner-lock may need two hands if you are a lefty but at that point it is already open and done what you needed it to do. If you were going for your handgun afterwards, the best bet would be to just drop the thing anyway. Switchblades are a no-no here. However spring assisted knives as shown are very legal and they even sell them in WAL-MART. As a matter of fact, the last ruling, they were legal in at least 47 States. Switchblades are only about 10 or so. NYC and CA, a freaking noise-picker is illegal, so I'd imagine they are too. You are really SOL there anyway! For the rest of the "FREE" folks, git-r-done! LOL

Oh yeah peeps, that pocket clip is on there for a reason on these type of tactical knives. DON'T bury it in your pocket or remove it. That knife loses much of it's tactical practicality if it sitting at the bottom of your pocket with lint, change, or whatever garb you have in your pocket keeping you from easily and quickly drawing it. Most have extra holes that are pretapped so you can configure it for right and left hand users. Some models even have a glass breaker on them. EMTs seem to really like those. Most come in plain or serrated blades and even 50/50. 50/50 is what I prefer on my tactical knives. A seat belt or attackers shirt or coat is no match for the razor factory edges that come on these extremely high quality knives. That is another thing, don't use your tactical knife for daily cutting chores unless you can and have the tools to resharpen it. Most will even put back the factory edge for you if you wish for a small charge. About 5 bucks give or take. If it is dull, it won't do what you are carrying that knife for either. Carry another pocketknife for that stuff. It's what all the guys and myself do. Most importantly, that clip is designed so you carry the knife in your pocket and the clip facing out, NOT the other way around! Do you know how many dorks you see stumbling around with it on the outside! Cops and other serious people are laughing at you, don't you hear and see it? LMAO What a dork!!! LMAO

I am not in LE or the military and have no technical training as such. Carrying a firearm takes 2 completely different skillsets IMO. You need to first find a weapon that fits you and 1 that you shoot comfortably. You need range time to learn to use it well, breathing techniques, trigger control, muscle memory etc. Being able to shoot a weapon consistently is only half of the task. The 2nd is a mindset to use it. When the balloon goes up adrenaline takes over and your plan will go out the window, you will operate on instinct to survive. If you are not mentally prepared to engage a target you will die.

Mogal and niteeyes, I have much respect for your input here, great advise from both of you.

Dont listen to the guy who says shoot a round in the air, if you shoot, you shoot to stop a threat, when the police arrive on a shooting scene, there will be 1 story to tell, it will be mine of self defense, the bad guy will be dead.

I have a CCW permit in Florida and I carry a 9mm with +P ammo along with an extra mag. If you are not in the mindset to use the weapon to defend your life, you will in fact just become an armed victim.

Take some classes by a GOOD instructor and learn techniques that will save your life if you ever need to use your weapon. Massad Ayoob has some good vids on Youtube and a few good books you should read.

Good luck and let us know what weapon you select

For all the anti 9mm crowd, I have never had anyone at the range volunteer to hold my target and test their theory of its lack of power......

A .380 may be a small round but I would rather have it than nothing.

Remember OP, quality wins over quantity every time. What do you have? Well...... I have a Jennings J-22, Torea$$ 24/7 9mm, Hi-Point 9mm, Phoenix HP-22, Intratec Tec-9, and a Hesse HK-91 clone. You could have bought most likely, two or three of any firearm I listed so far and had money in the bank. Junk is junk, buy ONE that works. I can't tell you how many times over the years I've seen some guy keep buying and buying until he smartens up and decides these guns are trash and then tries to sell them. That $300 handgun, they will offer you $100 bucks for it if you are lucky. I saw them offer a lady $40 for a Taurus 85 .38 Special. The guy gets p*ssed and storms out butthurt and never goes back. Who was the dummy here?

I've been browsing this forum, some very interesting and helpful discussion!

I live on a quiet, semi-rural dead-end street on a very large fenced lot. It is well-lit by the township, but quiet and I have no immediate neighbors. I am a single, small, middle-aged woman with three dogs; two large scary-looking ones, and one smaller noisy one. They are house dogs, they have the run of the property but are inside with me at night, or when I'm not home.

I do all the common-sense things like keep the house locked and secure, have porch light and back yard motion-detector floodlight, I know my neighbors (we watch out for each other.) One neighbor has a house key and will come over and let my dogs out if I have to work late.

However I live just north of one of the most high-crime cities in the country and recently there have been problems; crime has skyrocketed. One neighbor had his house broken into one night recently and stuff stolen. I figured, won't happen to me - the cowardly little thugs aren't going to even try, with the dogs inside. However, last week an elderly man who lives down the end of my road was sitting watching TV and was shot THROUGH HIS FRONT WINDOW. One bullet went through his cheek and took off part of his nose, another hit him in the arm. He bailed out the back door and ran to the neighbors who called the cops, they never found the guys, he didn't even see them.

So, suddenly, I am feeling vulnerable. If the little ****es are willing to fire multiple times through a window, the dogs aren't much of a deterrent. Plus I don't want them harmed. I went to a party and came home very late one night last week and felt really nervous...all I had was a can of (don't laugh) foaming wasp spray to defend myself with between my driveway and my front door. I refuse to ask friends of neighbors for an escort after dark, and refuse to feel vulnerable in my own home.

I have never fired a handgun. I have fired M16s in the Navy Reserves, ages ago, and an ex-boyfriend was a serious collector so I got to play with automatic weapons a lot on the range. But other than that I am clueless. I am thinking a 9 mm handgun? I don't want something wimpy...if God forbid I ever really need to point a firearm at a human being, I want it to be reliable and do damage. I also want to be able to carry it easily.

What's my best option? I'm going to call a couple of local ranges and find out about training and to see if they rent guns...I live in a restrictive state and have to jump through hoops to be legally armed (which is my intent.)

Recommendations? Browsing gun forums and online gun stores is a bit overwhelming.
1 gun is never enough. I would probably die at the gunsafe trying to decide which one I want in a SHTF situation.

But if I HAD to choose one, it would probably be a Remmington 870 shotgun with slugs.
