Alarm, 2 personal protection dogs (neither bark, but they will bite), 1 roams down while 1 sleeps w/ kids. FNP-45 (15+1), wife has Benelli M4 on her side. And that's just what's by the bed.

M1 carbine, Ruger SP-101 (.357), 20 GA shotgun.

I don't keep them loaded (the .357 speedloader and M1 magazine are "loaded," though). And I do have a very sharp WW2 vintage machete right next to the bed.

Why would you not keep them loaded? You are already at a HUGE disadvantage and chances are you are toast.

Cali Bass Man, 'she' is just dragging it out and up to no good for you this time. She lives in la la land where everyone is always safe, and there are no bad guys. Be warned.

This is the way of it sometimes when no suffereing has ever occured, people who see life that way have never lost anyone to murder, rape or other violent crime.

So their best defence is to hide like a rabbit under a stump, and let life go by, as a child does.

Unfortunatley I can't say the same, as in 1999 my father in law and his 2nd wife were stabbed to death in the teens of times each, and the SWAT team was beaten by the Fire Dept by 2.5 hours.

Neither of these Depts made it in time to save my in laws.

Am I armed, yes Sir to the bleedin teeth. Never again will I be unarmed till Death. Really it's best to just ignor her.

With all due respect to everyone here, this has already been covered in a fair amount of detail.

There certainly is. It's the sound of barking dogs who are waking their beloved leader. I'll be alerted long before intruders can get into the house. I'll leave the dogs in the bedroom so that they don't become victims, then amble out into the darkened house which I know very well, turn on the outside lights, and peek out. And yes, I'll be armed from the time I rise from the bed. Unlike manufactured alarm systems which have only one level of response, dogs have several. From their barking, I can tell if they're responding to animals outside, regular callers, or unfamiliar people.

I've noticed something interesting. The people who seem best prepared live in areas where a home invasion is virtually inconceivable, whereas people in bad areas seem to expect no danger from anyone. People are assumed to be armed where I live. Even if intruders are very willing to kill, they'll almost certainly be aware that they may be the ones who die, rather than their intended victims.

Well, it's not a muzzle loader. How long does it take to pull the bolt on a semi-auto carbine?
