and that is a little pocket pistol, since what matters is getting the gun out and pointed at the attacker, in time for him to see it and stop bothering you. Once shtf, tho, the pistol BETTER NOT have much of a role at all, or you are going to die early. The rifle better be always at hand, once everyone is carrying a longarm and nearly all of them are real fighting autorifles, or at least 22lr auto rifles. They make anyone, who has nothing but a pistol, look like a fool. All you can do, once shtf, with a pistol, is ambush somebody and take a longarm off of the body, and use whatever that is to get a real rifle.

Until shtf, tho, longarms are MOST unlikely to be at hand when you get attacked. you are 4x as likely to be attacked while away from home as when at your 'castle", and the longarm can't go with you to most places, and in any case, is most unlikely to be in hand when needed, regardless of where you are. A pistol in hand beats the hell out of a shotgun that is "merely" one step away. While you are taking that step and bringing up that shotgun, EACH attacker can shoot you 4-5x.

I have pistols but the only time I use them are for culling livestock, putting pets to sleep, or signaling to hunters when they have wandered too close to my house [I live in dense forest so it is common for tourists to get lost in the woods. On occasion tourists will begin firing when will be really close to my house].

When I was a Police Officer I carried a handgun and drew it a few times. When I was in combat I used a handgun many times. But now that I am stateside and retired I see very little reason to carry a handgun anymore.

Of course, I have a selection of rifles. I have calibers that will stop a truck, and calibers that are good for squirrel and rabbit. I do use my rifles fairly often. Mostly for fox and weasel, on rare occasion I shoot at bobcat or coyote.

I do not see much changing in terms of pre-SHTF as compared to post-SHTF.

As for your 'advise' [with all due respect] I think you need to get some real world experience. I think you may have watched too many movies.

I feel that this advice has to be the worst that I’ve read in quite some time.

If you’re going to carry a firearm concealed, make sure it’s a half decent man stopper. Pocket pistols do not exactly have the best reputation. In fact, most are a joke.

The biggest key to personal protection is situational awareness. Learning to see threats before they happen, and then avoid them. Then there’s the obvious, if you can avoid an area known for a lot of violence or you’re quite certain if you do something or go some place that you’re putting yourself into a very risky situation, then avoidance is the best self defense I know.

The firearm is always the last resort, but if you’re going to use it, make sure it’s a good caliber, reliable, man-stopping round, and shoot to kill. I’m not going to brandish a weapon just to ward somebody off. If I draw, it’s to shoot because by the time that situation arises, I’ve already exhausted all reasonable peaceful methods.

By the way, if you're going to carry some sort of deadly weapon and even less than lethal personal defense, it's best to check with Federal, State, and local laws to make sure that you're not violating them. Most violations of these laws are felonies and carry life long repercussions.

It’s been a few days since somebody’s started a decent topic worthwhile debating…
