I'm not so sure about this. Perhaps the official stand has changed recently? But as I recall, a big part of the reason for the storage of supplies and food, the planting of gardens, and the raising of animals within the LDS membership is to prepare for the "end times," which to me would/could certainly include a collapse of our civilization. In fact, it's certainly prophesied within LDS scripture. That's neither here nor there, though, because it can serve as either, in addition to being a good way to minimize required income and dependency in the okay times.

The name of the Church includes the phrase "Latter-days," which obviously implies that its members believe we are now living in the last days. These "last days" could go on for hundreds of more years, though, and no one is predicting that the end is currently in sight. The Church's emphasis on having a year's supply of essentials is primarily due to concerns over tough economic times in the present, as opposed to some kind of an end-of-the-world scenario.

True enough. But no one is predicting that the end is not currently in sight, either. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the line something like "But of that day and hour knoweth no man"?
