Older and wiser
My mother, age 87, was a community resource during Katrina. She taught people how to use a non-flush toilet, safely dispose of garbage, etc. We used shower curtains to make an outside shower on our clothes line. We had the only clothes line in the community. You would not believe how many people we met once word was out that we had a shower!
We pinned the shower curtains across and down 2 lines of the clothes line. The person stood on a pallet to shower. A watering can supplied the water. Wet down, soap down, rinse. Each person brought their own water, or we would supply it for the first shower. (we filled large garbage cans and tied them to the fence before the storm)
When I was younger, I laughed at the saying 'older and wiser'. During Katrina, I watched people doing things the hard way and realized that the longer you live, the smarter you get about living!

Just for that you'll have to come over and clean off my computer screen.

This is a good thought--we should all be learning skills as fast as we can b/c even if we never use them we'll need to teach them to the young'ns and it might be your only ticket in the door to safety if you have a lot of useful knowledge. I'm afraid that people will just be so clueless and so stressed out that they'd be unable to think straight but I think there'll be some pleasant surprises as well and the older folks can be a huge help.

The best prep for the elderly is to have raised your children with kindness so that they still like you, and to have raised them to be educated and responsible.
If you did not do that, it is too late now.

I don't have children because I never wanted them; now my wife is dead so I'm alone.
But I've acquired plenty of knowledge as well as what I need in a material way. People without kids avoid a lot of expenses. If they used their money wisely they're in good shape.

I'm just a bit past my prime also, at age 75, and I can't do the hiking with a heavy backpack like I once could. I've been storing food for awhile, but my supply of usable water isn't what it should be. I live with in five miles of a huge lake, but I couldn't drink the water from that lake with out processing it in some way. I've bought quite a supply of Mountain House freeze dried food and have roughly a years supply of food in my home. I've also bought Mountain House food to eat while in hunting camp, and while camping in general, just to see what it would be like to have to survive on it. Mountain House Food is made in Albany, Oregon, which is located a few hours North of my home. I bought the food from a company by the name of Emergency Essentials, they not only sell freeze dried food, they sell other supplies for those of us who want to be self sufficient. I have generators and fuel to run them, but if worst comes to worst, none of this stuff will last forever. I asked my doctor about buying a years supply of drugs and he kind of poo-pooped the idea and said it wasn't necessary. He told me to get a good supply of aspirin, but didn't have much to say about high blood pressure meds. I suppose it is possible that blood pressure would go down if we got more exercise, that was his feelings. I think you reach a point in later years when your health will determine how much longer you are going to live. I have kidney failure, and while I'm not yet on dialysis, one of these days I will be. When that happens if the SHTHF there is a good chance that I will also.
I would like to recommend a book by James Wesley Rawles titled Patriots (a novel of survival in the coming collapse). This book is about some people living together and making the best of a bad situation during a time of collapse. The author writes a blog on survival called SurvivalBlog dot com that I have read for years, he has some very good information to help anyone who is interested.
