I have been told on a couple different occasions that this is sort of the benchmark for being prepared in today's economy in case you happen to lose your job. Aside from whether or not you agree with that figure, do you have at least 6 months of savings set aside in case of emergency?

My husband and I do not have much debt except our mortgage on our 2 yr old home and DH has a small amount left on his student loan. We both have well paying careers and do not have any kids so we put a lot of our salary towards savings.

I have over 2 years (assuming a monthly budget of $1500)..

It all stemmed from being uncertain about being laid off or fired. Once I hit the 2 year mark, I stopped caring as long as I continued to do my job..

Nice! Hopefully you won't have to worry about that and one day you'll have that money to play around with.

Savings of what? Paper Monopoly money? No thanks.

Fiat currency has historically "blown up" too many times for me to trust it. I do, however, have several years worth of savings in provisions (food, supplies, tools, barter items, etc)... and at least six months savings of something that has been considered "money" for most of civilized human history--of course, I don't count on that either. That's just a backup.

I'd go so far as to say that there are certain bills which recur regularly enough and are important enough, health insurance being one, that I try to pay those at least 3-6 months forward. Thus, "x" number of months in savings also means having some of the most important and predictable bills already pre-paid in addition to having "x" number of months in pantry food, water, etc... .
