I guess we could have invested the $14 trillion wasted on the war on poverty too....

Why don't you check out the Politics forum? You seem to have a lot more interest in politics than in Self Sufficency and Preparedness.

We may have spent a lot of money on military efforts (to be sure, almost all of it went to pay American soldiers and American manufacturers and service providers), but we have wasted much more on social welfare programs that have done nothing to expand the economy.

This year, Obama has cut the military down to about $526 billion, while boosting the overall budget to $3.8 trillion.

While we could argue all day long about how necessary this or that war was, whether we should keep this or that base open, whether we should fund this or that weapons program, historically speaking the military proportion of the GDP is at a normal level.

What's extraordinary is that we are spending $3.8 trillion yet taking in about $2.7 trillion. Would the country actually fall apart if we cut spending to less than $2.7 trillion? I highly doubt it.

No it wouldn't fall apart, but you would sure hear a lot of whining and bellyaching from all those that want their share of that government largesse

The military is usually considered the bad guy, but social programs take the lions share of the federal budget every year, however we can't touch that!

If we weren't wasting so much money on so many social engineering wastes, if individuals were allowed to keep some of their own money, just think of the money that could be invested in actually creating a product worth buying or spent to find solutions to problems like peak oil that consumers would actually buy, and would actually work....

Let's not forget Uncle Bill, Aunt Nancy and a lot of other Democrats. They were actually the ones who really started beating the drums of war.

Florida used to have a rebate program (I am not sure they do now) and coupled with federal tax credits it ended up making the solar install ridiculously affordable.
In Houston TX, and many other places, it's ridiculously financially prohibitive.

yep, we need to drop all entitlements, kick out all the illegals, put the marines guarding the double fence at the southern border. Also, do away with 90% of the military/spy establishment, drop all welfare, especially to corporations, including farms.
