Cans often freeze during shipping. The canneries are aware of this and take precautions. I've never seen a can burst or even expand.

There is no way for anyone to answer that with any reasonable intelligence because we have no idea what else you have, what are the contents, what size are they and most important, why are you stocking them?

If you are one of those who are planning to survive for years under some form of collapse of society scenario, 15 will not do. But, if your looking to be able to remain in-place without worry when the storms hit and knock out power for a couple of weeks and all the stores are empty and close, 15 may be enough when taken in context of everything else you have.

The average person has about a two week supply of nutrients in their home just they may not have recognized it. I recently had someone send a DM with a list of the items in their kitchen and their week or so supply ended up being almost 6 weeks worth once they applied reasonable survival understanding and proper planning of use. So how many cans is enough depends on the total inventory of your average stock of food and food products you may take for granted on a daily basis.

If you ever see a can of food that has *expanded*, do NOT eat it !!

The stuff inside went bad and the gases expanded.

I probably have about 50. We keep about a weeks worth of food, could probably stretch it to a month, but would probably loot by then, and there should be plenty of elk, deer, burros, dogs, prarrie dogs and people (yum) to make it six months or so. Then we starve I guess. Sigh. Humm, maybe we need to think this through better.

There is one da** dog barking next door that may not make it to the apocolypse if it doesn't shut up! Grrr.

I have seen canned food expand from cold. I would expect all the canned goods to be destroyed in the Alaska cold.

Water expands when frozen and contracts when thawed. Once a steel can expands it won't contract. If it bursts in that situation or just leaks the food can be bad. However, it doesn't keep expanding as the temperature becomes colder. If it's OK at 20 it will be OK at-70.

People think we're idiots because so many wish to bring up problems that aren't going to occur. People who worry about commercial food are the same people who worry about zombies and asteroids.

Assuming you are talking about regular grocery store size cans, I have about 300.

Not totally related to canned food, but expanding on my question of canned goods freezing, I wonder what will happen to my year supply of contact lenses if I left them behind in my cold house for a month, I wonder what temp the solution they are in freezes at and if they would still be good after getting frozen up then thawed out ....

I really need to get glasses in case of shtf.
