We sell the bulk of them to restaurants, but now have a contract to sell to an independent butcher in TN. Without that new arrangement, we never would have increased the numbers. We can only eat so many chickens, but ours are really tender and flavorful, as all organically raised.

The turkeys, we can't keep the orders filled. Last fall, we sold about 60 that had been pre-ordered and pre-paid by late summer. That was in addition to about a dozen we kept for ourselves anf family. As the holidays came near, we were besieged with requests for more, but didn't have them. This year, we already have orders for about 30 of this years' birds, so we'll be doubling our turkeys. People like goose, too!

We've been toying with the idea of processing up Turduckhens. Very popular!

Mrs. SS is the chicken expert 'round here and takes care of everything related to them. She could talk chickens with you all day long!

Well, get her a user name, and put her on! I'm still new enough to this thing that I'd be happy to learn all I could from her! (As long as she doesn't charge too much.... )

I have already asked her to join but she said no. I call her the expert because she knows more about it than I do and has several years of practical experience. She would be the first to say that she's still learning too.

How about a correspondence course? Something like relaying questions to her to get an answer. Or at least her suggestions as to information locations.

I'll ask. What level of information do you need, beginner, intermediate, ...?

I call her the expert because she knows a lot more than I do, and it gets me out of participating.

She is not a chicken expert per se. She has dealt with only Jersey Giants in recent years.

She doesn't raise them commercially so couldn't help you there. Nor'Eastah would know more about that.

Folks are more interested in zombies and cannibalism.

Real useful information is not appreciated on this board. Much better to post about hording gold or how government is the savior of civilization, or to denigrate folks that actually do self sufficiency such as raise their own food.

Sad state of affairs.

Well..I guess I will just carry on as "Boring"...tending to my flock of poultry and my veggie gardens. I don't buy into the zombie craze thing.

I'm holding my own on that one. I keep posting topics that are (or should be) of interest to those who wish to become more self-sufficient. Prepping is fine, until you run out of basic supplies. Raising your own crops and meat on a continuing basis will ensure that you don't run out, no matter how long hard times last!

I have been accused of trying to turn this into an "agricultural" forum. I never have done that, and will stand my ground. All the guns in the world will do you no good when you no longer have a stash to defend. All the gold in the world will do you no good when nobody has anything of value to sell to you.

Survivalism is about more than guns and gold!
