Of course, what we are observing now is the eternal war between the prosperous and the impecunious. Does anyone suppose that those who say that money and precious metal will be worthless have ever had any?
Thats the thing...under a total collapse, even gold may have little value. Alcohol and cigarettes do well under collapsed regimes.
It all depends on the level of collapse.
I plan to distill alcohol in the event of collapse that includes prohibitory regulations. I know how to do it from experimentation; I have access to sugar beet produsers in the area; I have yeast stored. In the event that my yeast is lost I can culture wild yeast. That won't produce just rotgut as I can distill at high proof. From a safety standpoint, I know what's dangerous about the head.

To quote one of my favorite song writers: (with a slight twist)
