Dug in dirt, backhoe and bobcat available. Will not be filled with water. I plan to use a camouflaged covering that would not support any weight over 5 pounds per sq ft. Assuming you have enough room, what would be ideal distance from the home, how deep would you make it, and how wide should it be. Please give an explanation why, to be helpful. This is on a 5 acre plot, mostly private, partially surrounded by federal land, not a family home or a primary residence. As of now, no further traps are planned, but spikes and snakes are at the top of the list.

That will bring a prison term anywhere. Boobytraps are illegal. Ask an attorney.

This booby trapped trench around your house will most probably be likely to impale unsuspecting kids or peoples pets rather than repel some hypothetical invading hordes. definitely sounds illegal in the context you want to use it for.
