Just heard something interesting on the radio. Commentator said that North Korea's nukes might be designed to explode above a country to create an EMP incident. He said the last 4 nukes were all designed to explode at the same distance above the planet and that only 3 EMP nukes could take out the U.S.

He said that the only branch of government that appears to be taking EMP's seriously is the military. Getting funding from Congress seems to be a major problem.

Since I am a hurricane prepper, losing power would be an inconvenience, not a disaster - for me. But, my mother is now receiving hospice care in a nursing home and some of the people in the home need refrigerated meds. That nursing home would become a charnel house.

I would hate for One Second After to become a reality. I wonder if Kim really believes he can do this and live, or if it's just another North Korean blackmail scheme.

How North Korea Could Fulfill Its Promise To Erase The United States

File under things to keep you up at night:

-I don't think NK could pull it off.

-I do think China could pull it off and make it look like NK did it.

Fake news -
1.) NK does not have a delivery method (ballistic missles) that can reach the US...they can barely reach past the sea of Japan (probably not).
2.) Saying "China can pull it off" makes no sense at all, as if they want to destroy it's main trading partner. North Korea is probably more of a thorn and problem in China's side than the US.

I'm sorry but that's wrong.

they most certainly CAN detonate an EMP over the continental us today if they so choose to commit a murder suicide.

1- the most overlooked method is use a satellite as a delivery vehicle. They already have 2 satellites orbiting the US at the optimal altitude of 300 miles for an EMP strike. they orbit us multiple times a day. load a warhead in a satellite, have it orbit on a polar trajectory coming from the south pole over us to the north pole and so on, and we do not have any reliable defenses to stop it.

2- the could very easily launch a short or intermediate range missile armed with an EMP designed nuclear warhead off a container cargo ship. Don't believe its possible? research the north Korean freighter that was smuggling Cuban SA-2 (nuclear capable) missiles through the panama canal. it was only stopped and searched because they thought it had drugs.

3-NK now has solid fuel submarine launched ballistic missile capabilities. their SLBMs are now becoming a threat

4- they have a multi stage liquid fueled rocket that certainly can reach the continental US.

5- more concerning they are making rapid gains in their solid fuel rocket capabilities. solid fuel is much more of a threat because they are more transportable and can be launched with no warning. liquid fueled preparations can be predicted more easily and need more facilities.

6-and you have to worry about NK's hacker army unit121, they could do some serious damage.

putting on my chess playing foreign policy hat, who's to say China wouldn't prod NK to attack us. china says ("Hey Kim, I have intel the US is going to try and cause a kinetic regime change and take out the ruling party and leadership very soon maybe even within days.") Kim think's he's going down and wants to take us with him. far fetched you say? well play out this...

What does China stand to gain?
well... for one there would no longer be a north Korean problem as they would be reduced to ash. China would no longer have to worry about NK's issues.
2- The US would be out of the way. we would no longer be top dog.
3- China can do anything they want in the South china sea. they can take back Taiwan, they can take the ENTIRE Pacific basin and no one can stop them.
4- they lose us a trading partner but they gain far more resources and world wide influence. they could being colonization of anything they want.
5- they could even establish themselves on the west coast of the US (following an EMP strike) as "humanitarian aid" and there wouldn't be much we could do about it.
6-China uses NK as the patsie to take us down and China rises to global dominance. China would take our role and then some on the world stage and would probably increase their trading capability in the long run.
etc...

an EMP as we know it and America as we know it is toast. at minimum 75% of our population will die off and we will be a shell of what we are today on the international scene for the rest of our generation.

I'm sorry as well....they have SPACE JUNK in space, not functional satellites. Soon after launch NASA identified them as tumbling uselessly and without direction.
NK satellite launches are to test their ballistic missile technology, not really to launch nukes or EMP via satellite. Most of the launches fail - in two instances they managed to get object orbiting, useless as they are.

But hey, no one denies they bare watching. In a couple decades, unchecked beyond the standard sanctions they might achieve there goals.

China...LOL, it's amazing how people don't understand how intertwined China and the US is. You preppers are a hoot. I travel there on business 3 or 4 times a year, my company has employees and plants there. I work and party with my Chinese coworkers. Hey I can't take a crap without the PRC knowing about it when I am there or comeback without spyware placed into my PC, I understand the climate, but one thing I've learned is that China likes money and profits....war is bad for business.

A lot of this stuff is meant to distract people from the real issues: "Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain!"; "Look over there, while we secretly do something over here".

The media is bought and paid for by the Left in this country. If there is ever an EMP here, it will be either brought on by the federal gov't, or "allowed" to happen, like 9-11 was. We do have ways to prevent foreign enemies from causing us harm, but it depends on whose best interests it serves, whether they do so or not.

Meanwhile, the real and imminent threat is civil war in the US. That is what we should be preparing for. That is the real SHTF scenario. We get closer every day. Are you prepared for this eventuality? Why are you worrying about North Korea - a mere pygmy on the world stage - when we have threats from socialists and Marxists right here in our own backyard?

I refuse to be intimidated by two things
A) men named Kim
B) short tiny Korean people. They are just so tiny and cute I want to squeeze them like a teddy bear. Not dangerous.

Lil' Kim is just posturing to feel important. Maybe we should send Dennis Rodman over there to calm him down.

Also, I don't believe an EMP (especially an amateur one from NK) would be as devastating as they say it would be. I'm sure directly under the blast, some things would get fried, but 3 to destroy the entire U.S.? No way. Call me an uneducated nay sayer. I'd worry about 100 other things before I lost sleep over this.

you are correct, as of right now their satellittes have no apparent purpose. Know one knows what they are for, and, if you believe what the government has said they are "not sending out signals, and tumbling in orbit". Whether that is true or not might not make a difference. Tumbling would make no difference if they are capable of receiving a signal to detonate. Who knows if there is or is not a nuclear warhead in them. Hopefully our X-37 is being useful while in orbit and checking up on them...

NK does not need a high yield warhead to create an EMP. The media reports continually say "only 20kt" etc... if the device is engineered in such a way to expend all of it's energy on emitting a massive amount of gamma rays (similar to a neutron bomb) it will not have a high explosive yield but would be optimal to create a high EMP yield. It would send off a massive e-1 and e-1 wave through our ionosphere creating a devastating HEMP.

they are not decades away.

NK had a bunch of former Soviet nuclear physicist experts join them when the soviet union broke apart.

NK is a easy to mock, sure... but they are also one of or the biggest threats we currently face and it's foolish to ignore them. There is so much information out there if you are willing to look for it.

a country like NK could DESTROY our society. not with traditional nuclear warheads but they certainly can with an EMP attack. (and they also share their technology with Iran)

NK is certainly in the top 3 things you should be worried about.

I've spent too much time reading about them and their capabilities. unfortunately because they are goofy, reclusive and backwards no one takes them seriously.

I don't take them seriously. At all. Some things I worry about more than NK
A) airborne pandemic with a high mortality rate (Ebola on steroids)
B) the U.S. and Russia both playing around in Syria in close proximity to each other
C) our own governments globalist agenda of constant war and ever expanding military
D) turmoil in our country leading to riots/civil war
E) the ever expanding security/police state eroding what's left of our freedoms and spying/tracking our every move.
F) getting into a car accident
G) living in a real life idiocracy
Just to name a few.

NK is very low on my worry list. If they even attempted any nuke attempt, NK would be a leveled into parking lot wasteland in very short order and they know it. There's no way a single EMP from NK would destroy our society. Temporarily disable a city or two? Sure. But not destroy the entire U.S.

Much better to worry about our own fanatical war crazed government trying to recreate their own Armageddon fantasy scenario from the bible in real life.
