OK, another hateful person dropping by to malign patriots and preppers.

A little insight on his mentality:

Can't speak for anyone else, but I'd rather die a quick death than have to use any survivalist equipment. There's never a great chance of the actual need for it at any given time--yet--but the mindset of the survivalist (at least for me and my husband) is that it *will* eventually happen, we just don't know when. If anyone thinks this society is going to last this way till the end of time, that person is foolish to the highest degree. There will be an end and it may be disastrous. It's a good idea to be prepared for the worst because there's no guarantee that you'll be one of the ones to die at the outset; the other option, unless you find some way to kill yourself (which I heard is not as easy as it may sound) is to die a slow and painful death. This is what we're trying to avoid here by preparing for the worst!

It got too close to the truth, that's why it was shut down. The government couldn't stand the idea of a good percentage, perhaps a majority, of people being exposed to the idea that hey, maybe this society is kinda run by corporations. Well, that's what we get when we allow ourselves to be under tyrannical control!

I wasn't aware there was a stigma...my friends think I'm cool and smart
and want me around in case of trouble.

Some of us might want to rethink OPSEC.

The current generation will consider your preps to be their property
as soon as things go badly for them.

Study: Nearly Half of Millennials Would Rather Live Under Socialism Than Under Democracy
Quote:
A joint survey by the research firm YouGov and the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation found that nearly 45 percent of millennials would prefer to live in a socialist society, compared to the 42 percent of millennials who said they would rather live in a capitalist one.

Seven percent of millennials took it a step further, responding that they would rather live in a communist society.

Compared to the rest of the population, the percentage of millennials who would rather live in a socialist society over a capitalist one is ten points higher than the general population surveyed.

“Millennials now make up the largest generation in America, and we’re seeing some deeply worrisome trends,†Marion Smith, executive director of the foundation told Fox News. “Millennials are increasingly turning away from capitalism and toward socialism and even communism as a viable alternative.â€

The title and your post pose very different questions.

"Survivalists" versus "being self-sufficient" are totally different things.

I find conspiracy theorists and people who orient their entire lifestyle around fear of running out, a bit wacky.

However, there is a balance. You need to have a reasonable emergency plan, and you should certainly have basic life skills like knot-tying, the ability to filter water, the ability to grow and prepare and preserve food, etc. and yes, these have declined in my lifetime and I'm only 40.

In my opinion, dependence on drugs is the #1 threat to most people's independence, followed by health issues caused by old age, lack of physical activity, and poor nutrition. It is not hard AT ALL to grow potatoes and melons and raise chickens, or even to make a fire. It's basic.

But it's almost as though preppers are over-compensating because of people who are economically infantile. Like, okay, you have a bomb shelter full of food. Great. That's not going to help because people who can't grow potatoes themselves because they are too stupid and weak, are not going to be able to raid you either. You don't need barbed wire. A fence, hell, even a really long walk could keep some of these people out.

So anyone who preps is a patriot? How do you figure that?

I hope that the S never HTF, but I also know that it eventually will.

Last Sunday we had a wind storm that blew down a lot of trees and took out the power grid. In a state with just over 1,000,000 people we had over 500,000 homes without power. Today is one week later and we still have over 15,000 homes without power.

The power grid here is faulty, it goes down fairly often. So we finally went to solar power 2 years ago. When last week's storm knocked out the power grid statewide, it was nice having power the whole time. We saw the need to prepare and it helped us.

I do not see how prepping is a bad thing.

About a year ago I started experimenting with solar. But to be honest I have just lit an out building and just slowly increased my battery bank. I have also installed a rain water collection system. But again, to be honest, I just have 1000 gallons of unfiltered and un-purified water. I have used it only for the garden. I have no intention of taking the main residence on my homestead off grid. But I do plan on building a very small 'tiny house' way back on the back 40 completely off grid. So my small experiments with solar and water collection have a purpose. And that is why I come here (and many other places) and absorb what I can. I simply hate all the political rhetoric on here. Over and over, by the same people. It is exactly why I self identify myself as liberal. I do not want to be even remotely associated with the likes of them.

I could do without the superiority which emanates from a lot of survivalists but otherwise I think its cool that they possess so much knowledge and skills.
