DK The real fall of Rome happened before the actual material fall. Once corruption so deeply undermines the rule of law, where no faith exists in the masses, the society fails.
Every attempt big business has made to garner grace and favor for itself has come at a terrible price. The very basis of business counts on a just civilization, and every time they purchased a license to steal, they shot themselves in the foot (right along with the rest of us). 30yrs of railing at the cops because they're 'harassing' or 'nannying' commerce... cops exist for a reason and deserve respect. While you were worried about taxes, you didn't worry about living wages. That was, and is, the greatest threat to your business, and to America.
This isn't about charity, it's about people robbed of their worth and simultaneously being accused of stealing. The only orderly way for the government to check the enormous unregulated pay disparity was through the tax code, or through price controls.
I'm so glad I'm nowhere near that AIG building. I expect pitchforks to come out any minute. Same with wall street.
With the pending collapse of our country about a year or two away, I thought I would begin a survival guide for West Virginian's.
West Virginians are their best at surviving disasters and this one will be just like the others.
The key to survival is planning, help from the societal group and adaptability.
I would like to hear your helpful and constructive thoughts on this issue.
thanks.
I really don't think our country is going to collapse. I really think there will be a turn around in 2010 or 2011. If we can get through the Great Depression and countless other smaller depressions, we will be fine. There is corruption in government, always has been and always will be. So we're going to be ok guys. Being over overseas really makes you admire America
With that said, if the unthinkable does happen. Guess where my little rump will be? I'll be making my merry little journey back to Elkins, or more specifically my parents house near Alpena. Just 2-3 miles from my fathers parents farm in Sully. In need be they/we could be completely self sufficient, and know the land. Its relative remoteness also could also be easily monitored and enforced.
If the country does fail, it would only be a matter of time before another government would be set up and in place. 300+ million people... I mean come on, something would come up. Maybe multiple countries or something...
Speaking of which... I saw on the news a few weeks ago that Chuck Norris is calling for Texas to secede the union and become its own nation, and he wants to be president. I fell out of my chair laughing. NO LIE
Make this suggestion to your people, GHO. Stockpile a few hundred dollars in canned goods that have a long shelf life.
When the country goes down it will be segmented into regions and military law will prevail.
Pockets of land will be protectd by self appointed county militias. Just as its done in the Asian drug areas.
Homeland Security Reports say that the population of the big cities will be sequesterd in those urban areas and kept there. It's called containment. They will starve there too.
We will be contained/ restricted here in these rural areas and I like that. I can survive here.
Read the bio on David Li. Has done the damage and is now back in Mainland China. A real eye opener.
We have experienced a 'Terrorist Attack that has cost Trillions and nobody can see it. Never even felt it..
And sadly, with the 'Dumbing Down of Corporate America and Congress, we have nobody qualified to solve the situation. Perhaps someone in another country has a solution.
What I see...the Russian/China solution?
Will put is in the grave without sounding a shot. And I remember Nikita Kruschev telling us that.
(We laughed at him too)
...Ask them to stockpile some food...and some seeds for Spring planting too.
We have an openly corrupt government, a bankrupt treasury, and a literate but uneducated populace; we are ripe for picking. We have been defeated in much the same way Rome was- from the inside out.
As China owns most of our debt, I'm guessing they will have first pickings on the carcass.
I agree with DK on the provincial militias taking control. I think for us, that won't be too bad, as you've said, we can support ourselves and that's what we will protect. It's the people in the cities that will suffer the greatest. When the food runs out, they will riot, and in the end have nothing but a burned out city to die in.
And for those of you who think you are so remote that yo0u won't be found, think again. If you pay property taxes and/or have a deed, mortgage or landlord, the powers that be know exactly where your remote place is. And if you bought a gun from a gun shop or hold a Concealed Carry Permit, they know who has guns, too.

I'm glad to see someone else call this the terrorist attack that it is!

On the topic of land "ownership", he rightly points out that we are no longer capable of "owning" our land. Just stop paying taxes, you'll be removed, and the property will sold to someone else- someone who is going to pay the "rent". We're just Serfs, paying the "King" for the privilege to occupy his land. We did it to ourselves, we let the politicians remove our fundamental rights without a whimper.
Information is collected from all flavors of websites and forums. They know who is where, and armed with what. They know where the "dissidents" are, and they will be the first to have their door kicked in.

I never read this book when I came to this painful realization in the mid 80's. I note this book was printed in 2005. Does this mean we're all getting on the same page now?
In the mid 80's I saw elderly people losing their paid for homes in what was formerly rural long island because the property valuations/ taxes were so insane they were displaced in the name of 'progress' and 'capitalism'. I call it legalized theft. Check out those slicksters on infomercials encouraging people to make their easy street millions from tax distressed properties. That's an honest living?

You saw in the 80's what many still do not. Those old folks in LI are, sadly, a perfect example of our lost freedoms.
Yeah, those Reverse Mortgage brokers are something, aren't they?
Too many Americans refuse to take off their rose tinted glasses. It's a coping mechanism to deny the fear of instability, or to quell their true belief that they've been swindled. When a jack-booted Schutzstaffel kicks the glasses from their face, they will see- quite clearly- the predicament we're all in.
