Your screen name certainly fits. Such a plan would get you killed out here. And I'm not exaggerating in the least. When the flood hit here, we could not get across the river, which you have to do to get to town. Do you honestly think that everyone could just sashay on down to a store if something bad happens? Or a hospital? Many of us do not live in areas where your 'plan' would be prudent, and if the power goes, we cannot run our wells to have water. So, little things like a generator come in handy. Your disdain for preparation may be OK for you, but that dog won't hunt for a lot of people. Therefore, your sneering makes no sense. Not everybody is in the same boat you are, so you might consider cutting folks some slack. Could be you may not always be so lucky in the midst of a disaster situation.

so if SHTF happens, and your grocery store runs out of food, and your electricity no longer is on, what will you do for food and water?

dont ask for the goverment, they might be there at all.

I don't believe in 2012, TEOTWAWKI, or any of the gloom and doom posters. What I do believe in is - stuff happens. Being prepared for stuff is just common sense. I had to care for two sets of parents after Hugo hit Charleston, and we brought food and water with us. They all said they didn't need it. We left it anyway. Turned out they DID need it, especially the water, because the water filtration systems failed two days later. You just never know.

As for Y2K, that was simply hysterical - and dangerous. I was on a forum every night advising people what to do and what NOT to do. There were so many damfooles out there. The guy who ordered a Port-o-let for the backyard of his apartment complex and threatened to shoot any one who used it, the guy who was storing 5 gallon cans of gasoline in his closet in his apartment, the guy who was trying to figure out how to hook his brandnew generator up to the thermostat in his apartment (it was hooked to a shared heat pump in the basement of the apartment) - the plain and simple idiocy of folks was totally breathtaking. What kills most folks in an emergency is their own stupidity. (I actually met the guy who started his charcoal grill in his garage during the ice storm/power outage in Charlotte NC to make coffee and burned his house down.)

Stuff happens. If 2012 happens I will deal with it as best I can. If tornadoes or earthquakes or fiscal ruin or anything else happens, I will deal with them as best I can. Life isn't aboutMadMax survivalism - it's about enjoying what you do, always being prepared yet enjoying life every day, minding your own business - and staying as far away from the idiots as possible. If I have cows and am making my own butter and cheese, I can sell them if nothing happens. If I have chickens I have meat and eggs to sell - free-range and organic. If I like deer and turkey, I can hunt them on my property, butcher them, and make everything from roasts to jerky and love every minute of it. If I have a garden, I have exercise and vegies and fruits I can can or sell. Surviving isn't a power game or a 90-minute movie - it is real, everyday common sense and a cheerful, prepared outlook, ready for anything.

LOL!

You'll know when the world's end is near, as it will ironically terminate when all the smokers will have quit smoking, (to live longer), obesity will have been wiped out (you'll live longer), cars made crash-proof (far fewer deaths),
our world will become as suicide-proof as a maximum security prison,
a cure for cancer finally arrives, and then, only then will the ultimate irony occur.

My only preparation for the end was done years ago: buying a gun to shoot myself. But not at home. To the top of the highest parking ramp in town.
Not taking any chances!
