Just a month or so ago I was spending $40.-$50. on several items and bought some nylon tubing (webbing), the cashier only charged me for 1 foot when I had ten , and I went back later and we corrected it.
When you pick up something to buy and you've considered it's value (price) that money is spent before you get to the register .
If there is a rebate or sale that is usually noted .
But say for instance that those items was poorly manufactured and you had to take them back, but the volume on the receipt didn't match the items in question ,are you going to offer a lie to justify the failure to correct it earlier ?

One time after taking the bags of groceries out of the cart and placing them in the trunk of my car I saw an item that I'd neglected to place on the conveyor belt and pay for - - - I took the item back into the store and went back through the check-out line to pay for it (not more than $5).

That's just me, I'd make a lousy crook because I'd run right to the police and confess.

I would and have and have been yelled at by store employees for doing that, a few times being accused of trying to defraud them.
