I need to purchase my first dryer. I know nothing about what to look for, what brand is best, what brands to maybe avoid, etc. (I have noticed online certain people say to avoid Maytags, etc) Consumer Reports cost money, and I just missed the issue on dryers, so I'm trying to get free advice! I will also need my old one hauled away (an old Kenmore Elite I inherited from mom) do most big companies like Home Depot, Lowe's, Sears do that for free?

I am looking for an electric dryer under $700 if possible. I don't need all kinds of ridiculous bells and whistles, but if there are actually useful features and it works well and is reliable that is all I care about. I do laundry 1-2 times per week.

We have a 1990 Maytag dryer and wsher. My appliance repairamn siad to kjeep it as long as possible because they are not made like them any more. I'll take his word as he has been repariing them for 45 years. I ask what brand now and he siad mnay are made witt eh same parts now and even many by the same manufacturer but whirlpool seems to be as good as he sees. he recommended a top loader with mechinical timer saying that elctronic timers are expensive to repair and that he has constant complaint on the front loaders of smells. Since he repairs under warranty for numerous manufacturer brands I'll take his word for it.

I've been using my Kenmore for about 18 years now.....still dries the clothes just fine...but the selection dial is tricky.....I see no sense in trying to repair it, at this point! I figure I've more than gotten my money's worth out of the thing!
