Not in the auto business. Years ago we had gas stations and small guy repair shops all over. Then the car dealerships starting changing the cars to more electronics making each car very different and pushing the little guy out because it was too costly to repair all cars. Now for the most part you have to go back to the dealership.
Well. the thread is about Walmart and Target. When you mentioned the 'big guys', I had NO inkling you were talking about auto repair.
And regarding the auto business...
1) The dealerships have NO involvement over what electronics are put into cars.
2) There still are "small guy repair shops" in my area. Maybe because people still go there instead of the dealership.
I like shopping at Target, they often have great deals (buy 2, get a 10 dollar giftcard, for instance), it helps a lot when stocking on baby stuff.
They also carry cosmetics I can't find anywhere else, such as Boots products (I never expected to find this brand in the USA... I was pleased when I saw it at my local Target!).

Someone else mentioned big guys and I was thinking of all of the smaller businesses that have disappeared because of the changes.
Dealerships do represent a car manufacturer and most cars today have more electronics inside them than ever before making it hard for the average repair guy to do repairs.
Yes..they can still do minor repairs like oil changes and tire changes...but many cars have to go back to the dealers for extensive repairs. We don;t have half as many little repair shops around as we did 20 years ago.
I despise shopping at Wal-mart, and probably do not go in there more than five times a year, mostly because their garden stuff in the spring is cheaper than Lowes.
The nearest Target is about an hour away, so I haven't been in one in a few years. I happened to be in that area a few weeks back, and decided to go in. It seems to have down hill. What happened to all the great home decor and stuff they used to have? And the trendy-yet-cheap clothing lines? Something has changed. At least it has at the one near me. I left without buying anything.
More and more, I'm shopping consignment stores and online. So much less hassle.
I despise shopping. 'Atmosphere' isn't a consideration. I just want to enter a store, find what I need, pay, leave.
Not long ago I went to WalMart with my son. He picked up a reel for his fishing pole, pair of Dickies trousers, shirt on sale. I got some laundry detergent and something from the food area. We wouldn't have been able to find all of those things at Target.
