Is it true? If so, is a nice Macy's selling stuff similar to Nordstrom's?
Do some Macy's sell Bloomingdale's products?
Macy's stores in my metropolitan area (SE MI) do vary the product mix to the surrounding demographic. Somerset is the clear flagship store. Oakland Mall has a very wide variety in its customer base, so it has a very wide variety of clothing. Stores with a large minority customer base, such as Eastland, Northland (almost entirely minority), and Oakland have more urban-style clothing. Not all Macy's carry all of Macy's various clothing brands.
Even within the same store, you can have different floors with different lines/prices. In one of the stores in Chicago, the lower women's floors have the higher end stuff, and the higher you go, the cheaper the stuff.
I'd say some of the nicer lines are comparable to some in Nordstrom's, but Nordstrom's is a notch higher overall.
I find interesting that some of the nicest communities like cities in Hawaii have very nice Macy's, yet do not have Nordstrom's or other high end dep. store because they lack the population.
There are even Macy's in non-malls.
I appreciate Macy's. I feel my local area offers a good selection of clothes. From discounted clothing at Kohl's, to college aged clothing at Forever 21, and to mid-range to designer clothing at Macy's.
all stores have difference depcnding on what the area customer buy. Why would they stock stufff when it doesn't sales well in that store? That is called marketing.
After Macy's acquired Federated, Macy's converted them. Then sales started dropping at the former Federated-branded stores and they weren't sure why. Then they did research and realized the customers of the Federated stores were very devoted and loyal to those stores and shopped there for a reason. Macy's then launched it's "My Macy's" plan which tailors each store's merchandise to the local market...it has been EXTREMELY successful.
In other news, Macy's is going through a $400 MILLION remodel of it's NY Flagship!
I think one way Macy's has been expanding is if you look at Hawaii or some small areas in Montana. Wealthy areas, but with no other department store but Macy's.
Our Macy's is nowhere near as nice as some others I've been in....and they seem to carry lots of larger sizes, but few things below a size 6....and their shoes.... not the great selection they used to have!
