Anyone start their Christmas shopping yet? (gifts, shop, charge, print)

Sam's, Wal-Mart, Target, etc., lately? We have Christmas rammed down our throat so much, for so long,
And millions of very happy Chinese people and their US trading "partners" thank us all very much!
I make a point of shopping local for Christmas gifts whenever possible.
I asked a shopkeeper once about why the Christmas items were being put out so early. I was told it was so people who needed to do layaway (90 days) could still buy Christmas and have it in time for Christmas. It made sense to me, but I agree that it does take some of the specialness (did I just make up a word?) out of the season by having it out in August. My mother was on a fixed income, and she loved to buy me a new piece for my Christmas village every year. She did the layaway thing.
I am going to make Christmans presents this year. I've had it with the commercialism! I hope no one buys me anything. I just want to get together with family and eat cookies and play board games!

I agree, I would like to just tell everyone let's not buy for eachother and enjoy the holiday. I'm not a scrooge but it gets old after awhile and seems meaningless, not Christmas but the shopping. I'd rather spend the money on some really good food for a special dinner.

It's funny you mention Layaway, I was at Walmart this morning (because I like it =)) and there was a huge sign apologizing that this is the last year they will offer layaway. You have to have everything out by Dec. 8th. I'm not really sure if it is all of the Walmart's but I think that's huge. Years ago I needed layaway, I'm glad I don't now, but I can imagine alot of people do. Anyway, I laugh all the time because they put Christmas stuff out so early, and then I feed into it by actually buying that Christmas stuff because I'm afraid it won't be there in Dec.! So I guess I'm the reason they put it out so early. =) It's all my fault
I make a lot of the gifts that I give. Either baked, canned or sewn. I do a lot of quilting, knitting, etc. I try to get any buying that I do done by Thanksgiving so that I can enjoy the season.

Could we all just go on strike? I'm already thinking that perhaps I will inform all the adults in my family that I am only buying for the kids this year, (I'm not too handy, craftwise. Two left thumbs. ). If I tell them now, no one will be taken by surprise. That would cut down on my stress considerably! Besides, maybe we should concentrate on our loved ones' birthdays, instead, to buy them gifts. You could actually spend a little more, if you wanted, and yet, spread it out over the year. I'm such a genious! I know, someone has already beat me to the punch with this idea! But, it's still a good one. We have to get a grip on this Christmas thing, for goodness' sake!
We draw names in my family - too expensive to buy for everyone. We also have a rule that we can't spend over $20.00. Have to be creative that way. It's actually a lot of fun.

Unfortunately, the only grip I have is on the shopping cart as I run through the aisles, laughing hysterically because I got the last Singing , Dancing Rudolph and no one can stop me!!!
