So I'm now walking an hour and a half a day and starting to add running in. I figured I would get some proper running shoes, as my old sneakers were about five years old and falling apart.

So I get Natural Balance, which is the brand I usually wear. They felt okay in the store. I start out on my walk today...and had to turn back in ten minutes because I could feel it rubbing on the back of my left heel. In just ten minutes it scraped all the skin off the back of my heel. The right foot and heel was perfectly fine.

I'm getting conflicting information about 'breaking in' running shoes. Some sites say to wear them around the house and let them mold to the feet. Others say that you don't need to break them in and if they rub, they should be returned.

Any thoughts? I rather like these sneakers and to be frank I lost the receipt, so I'm kind of hoping there's some way to break them in and salvage the situation. If I have to try and return them, any suggestions to a brand and make?

I don't think you can return them.

Buy something not too expensive that feels good in the store. That way, you risk less if they hurt.

Also, try thrift store. Shoes are like $4 there. Buy a few pairs. While you're there get some clothes too. Thrift stores are great.

Nordstroms Rack has great deals too.

It depends on the store's return policy. Not sure why you're posting in diet and weight loss though.

Maybe you can return but my suggestion is go to a shoe store that can actually see how you walk and run; they'll often be able to tell you what type of shoes will have the best support. Proper fitting shoes is key to minimize injury and walking/running incorrectly for your body profile It's worth spending the $80-$120.

Running shoes should feel good on your feet right off the bat. No breaking in period. Also running is a different movement from walking so other considerations need to me made. You may be able to take the shoes back depending on where you bought them. Go to a running store if you have one nearby and get properly fitted. Unfortunately there are no bargains for good running shoes. But you will be well rewarded with comfortable shoes.

Also - fyi - Natural Balance is a pet food company. I think you mean NEW Balance, which makes athletic footwear (including running shoes).

If you're experiencing trouble only on one heel, then there's probably some stitching in the inside seam sticking out. A little moleskin on the shoe (instead of on your foot) should fix it.

*laughs* Yes, that does make more sense, doesn't it?

I felt all over both heels and I don't feel any difference between them...no rough spots or seams. I'll try the moleskin anyway though, thanks!

Truly...no shoe should need "breaking in"...if they don't feel good, they don't fit properly!

And, yes....Moleskin is a wonder material! I use it in shoes, on the bottom of chair legs...under vases or anything that may scratch a table.....wonderful stuff, moleskin!!!

Another point to bring up. There are plain Jane cheep New Balance and then there are the good ones.

I wear New Balance shoes exclusively and have done so for years. Many local places carry the cheepo (sub $50.00) models and don't come in widths other than medium or wide. You really need to get your foot measured for the proper fit as I found out because I needed a EE width because my feet had changed over the years.

I found these guys and even after ordering over the net, their customer service and guarantee has been outstanding.

Browse their catalog, the prices are higher, but the quality is their too.

Your feet will love them.

Thanks for this link...they have an interesting foot measuring page that I'm going to print out and try. I wondering if my feet aren't two different sizes and that's why it rubbed only one heel.

The blister is still really raw, btw...hurts quite a bit. It's probably the worst blister I've ever had.
