No, what I meant was, Wal-mart buy out Penney's, and absorb Penney's clothing line into Wal-Marts, thus bumping up Wal-Mart's chic factor.

Definitely not the other way around.

It was pointed out that the payment must be accepted in US dollars. The medium of payment is up to the merchant. If the merchant advertisies they take VISA or Mastercard they must take a Credit or Debit of either. The merchant does have the right to refuse cash. I supported many small businesses in merchant services who did not take cash payments.

K-mart tried that when they bought out Sears. You see how that worked out, bad for both retailers. However I do think a Kohls or Target/ JCP merger might have some potential. Not Walmart though, just... yuck!

I went to Penneys recently and checked out at a traditional station but with the ipads and the little slider thing they slide your card through. He was also taking cash from other customers.

I think one of the biggest problems with the new Penneys is how hard it is to locate items that are on-sale! There is no advertisement or sign anywhere. It's like you have to dig through the entire department to find any good deals. I see many people just browse through the main aisle and leave and miss the great sale items because they don't look hard enough. Also, it never appears anything is on sale. You have to look at the tags on every table to see if something is reduced in price or not. Very time-consuming and it doesn't encourage a shopper to snag the best deals while they can.

They really need to fix this IMO. Bad for business! Other than that, I still love Penneys and still am able to get some great deals, but I have to spend a lot of wasted time looking for the reduced tags!

I saw what Casey above saw - they still were using check-out counters, but were using the card thingies AT the counters.

I don't know if it's location or what, but I LOVE Penney's, and their clothing and shoes are FABULOUS in my city. I just recently found the cutest sundress there, and their women's clothes are cute and trendy. But everything I've read insinuates they are in DEEP trouble as a business! I hope they make it - and their clothing that I like remains. I remember there was a period of time Sears actually had really nice clothes - UNTIL the merger with K-Mart. Now their clothes and shoes look dated and frumpy.

I suspect most stores still have cash registers and take cash, checks or cards, whichever is used by a customer. Everyone doesn't have a debit or credit card. My parents never had one, didn't want one and wouldn't have used it if they had. I've never considered Target a step up from Walmart. Seems to me K-Mart, Target and Walmart are about the same.

Agree! Target and K-Mart's clothing line is no better than WM's. I have purchased jeans and t-shirts at WM and they fit great and wear great. I'm very frugal (obviously) when it comes to buying clothes and wear them until they fall apart I've had Faded Glory jeans from WM that last years and years and don't look like cheap clothing.

In fact, a gal I worked with complimented the jeans and asked where I bought them, when I said WM she turned up her nose and scooted off.
