This is just PATHETIC!!! I usually do a lot of things online or mail from the office and use the postage machine. Well I was out and not near the office today and had 4 things I needed to get mailed out. Stopped at a post office and went in. Both of the vending machines were "OUT OF ORDER" and the one that DID work ONLY took credit cards and sold stamps BY THE BOOK. I don't need a book of stamps JUST FOUR! The line inside was forever long and only 2 people working. Okay, I'll be by another p.o. in a bit and I'll run in there.
RIGHT! That post office had TAKEN OUT THE STAMP vending machines COMPLETELY!!! The ONLY machine was the one that sold them by the book ONLY and with a credit card. NO! I only NEED FOUR stamps and can pay CASH! URGH Went inside and the line was even LONGER at this one and only ONE PERSON WORKING!!!
Those machines will sell you 4 "stamps". They won't be actual stamps, they'll be metered strips bearing the various amounts of postage that you've requested. I believe you just have to make a minimum purchase of $1.00. 4 stamps would cover that though.

I tried and it would not let me. But I still did NOT want to use a Credit Card for FOUR STAMPS. That is INSANE!
They want you to buy stamps by the book and now they are going broke so that when you send a pkg you now have to have it weighed and metered so that uncle sam is getting his fair share . also I send alot of mail out to relatives who do not have email and they also like the idea of getting a letter so I usually stick a little something extra in there and then the post office has the nerve to send it back saying they need .20 more because it wont go through their machine cause it is too bulky . What I want to know is are you really trying to put it through the machine or do they just look at it and determine that by sight . The whole post office stinks and needs a thorough over haul . they are always raising postage rates and they dont give better service so why the increase ?
I have a business, and use alot of stamps---now, I can only buy a roll of 50--and they're the wide stamps---takes up alot of space on an envelope----they say they're not getting rolls of 100 anymore, since the price is going up in a couple months AGAIN!

Do what I ended up doing........... stopped into one of those mailbox places. They had 4 stamps I could buy. WOW! They actually WANT business.
I sooooo wish we could pull out the yellow pages and select a different business to deliver our mail for us.

Costco sells the forever stamps but you have to get 100. Dollar cheaper than the post office
It's not for the dollar I just hate going to the post office.
I have a PO box so go to the post office regularly. the postage machines at the post office I went to also had the "out of service" signs on them, and they were recently removed in December. other post offices I've been to in Chicago also either have the "out of order" signs or removed machines. a post office I visited in Boston (wanted to mail home some Xmas stuff I got) also had machines w/ the "out of order" signs
I don't know is USPS just went w/ an unbelievable crappy vendor for their machines or they're just removing the machines nation wide, but it is very annoying. I tend to visit my PO box between classes (around 12-3pm) and there's always an incredibly long line and it gets frustrating waiting almost 15 minutes to buy a few stamps. I don't mail many items so never really liked the books (which I tend to lose before they run out), but it looks like I'm gonna have to since it's impossible to find stamp machines anymore (though I won't be buying my stamps from USPS-they've aggravated me by not even explaining the absence of the machines)
