I read this book about four years ago and since then I make it a point to be kind to people working in stores. The book was written as an undercover exposé by someone who worked as a waitress and in several low-rent stores (Walmart , for example). It was truly a heartbreaking book as not only the managers of the stores , but people who shop there are so discourteous to these (mostly working moms) who make very little money and who desperately need their jobs.

Barbara Ehrenreich wrote that. She also wrote a great book called, I believe, "Fear of Falling". Both are worth a read.

Oh! Just read this! It's about the American Middle Class. Here's the Amazon page on it (since I'm about to leave my office!). Amazon.com: Fear of Falling: The Inner Life of the Middle Class: Books: Barbara Ehrenreich

I also read Nickel and Dimed and it was a great book! I recommend watching Walmart the high cost of low prices. Netflix has it!

Actually, it is for some. When I bought it, I was asked if I'm taking some class at the local community college.

Come to think of it, my university has a novel every year that all the freshmen read. "A Lesson Before Dying". "Night". "The Things they Carried". Good books. "Nickel and Dimed" was one of them. Not my freshman year, but some freshman year.

So does this book show the rudeness that retail employees put up with? Is that the synopsis I'm getting from this thread? Because I agree that should be required reading for any consumer!

No, what's really shocking about the book is that a person working two jobs can't even afford to rent a room.
