A debit card is not a plastic check and is protected from fraud. You can believe it or not, I can tell you from experience that it is.
First most people do not go online to verify their checking acct balance on a daily basis to verify their balance even though its treated as a secured CC based on the limit of your acct. It is not a unsecured line of credit. Thus if they miss the 2 day window they are SOL. Secondly a debit card deducts directly from your checking acct which makes it a plastic check. Thus if one is not checking their balance or keeping track of it, then they won't get a notification until its overdrawn. A Debit card has some minimal protections, but not the same full protection of a Credit card.
