We have a small, I think 1.2 cu.ft. safe which we need to upgrade in size. It is not clear to me where to shop for safes. Google search takes me to Walmart and such but I am not sure that is where I want to go. I am not looking for gun safes as they are too big and heavy. So, where do people shop for safes and any recommended brands?

Start with your local gun store. If they don't carry any, they can direct you to some place that does.

You can also check the sporting good stores (Dick's, Sportsman's Warehouse, Cabela's, etc.), but they don't generally carry the better quality safes.

Some cities also have security/lock based businesses (e.g. locksmiths) that also carry safes.

Don't go cheap. If your stuff is valuable enough to protect with a safe, it's valuable enough to protect with a good safe. Spend the extra money for something that provides you with real security.

While you may not want a gun safe (as in big rifle safe), you may want to take a look at some of the pistol safes out there that are much smaller in size. The Office Depot also sells small safes.

This got me thinking that it is not a bad idea NOT to have the brand name displayed on the unit to prevent people from researching it.

You will want to find a safe that has several metal rounds that go into the heavy, thick, metal sides and top and bottom of the safe so that it can not be easily pried open. I ordered one through a manufacture on eBAY...and had it sent to my neighbor's address so the seller did not know where it was at (since they also had the combination to it). You will also want duel key and combination function with at least 5 number turns in the combination...each step takes more time for someone to 'guess' it.

Cabelas Sporting Goods should have exactly what you're looking for. Here's there web page listing all their safes.

A safe is a safe. It's a metal box with a lock - that's about it. Whether or not it's a "gun safe" is dependent on if you store any guns in it.

Nice quote - but it IS the OP that specifically said THEY do not want a gun safe ... not me.

Post #1: "I am not looking for gun safes as they are too big and heavy."
