Hi,
I have always wondered about this. There are a few services where you pay after you receive the service (Hair cut, restaurant meal, etc). I know in car repair, they simply keep your car until you pay, but what happens in the other situations? Anyone experience this?

If your card is decline and you have no other cards or no cash, they may just call the police.

It's easy enough to check your balance online before you go in to get the service and have an alternative (or wait). Other than getting hacked, there's no reason for that to ever happen.

But its no good because the intent was not theft and without that no theft charge can be proven. No different than when they Credit card swipe machine goes out. They have to make other arrangements. No intent of theft ;no theft charge; plain and simple. Doesn't mean it not a debt tho ;it is still.

I have had it happen but never without a second method of payment available...another card, check or cash.

This happens occasionally where I work. Someone will have left their wallet in their vehicle...or at home!...or their card won't work for whatever reason. When that happens the transaction is suspended and the items taken to Customer Service to be picked up later by the customer. Once in a while they don't come back but they usually do. Sometimes they just have to hit the ATM at the bank. We would never call the police. They've not committed any 'crime'.

Right, but what would you do if you provided the service before the charge (eg haircut, meal etc)

If you get declined for whatever reason just call the 24 hour 800 number on the back of the card and work it out with security. Usually if your card is declined it's for either insufficient funds or the card has been compromised. The security division can give you a temporary 24 hour grace period to solve the problem. If fraud is involved then the card may be confiscated and then it's different matter to deal with.

What could I do? Just have to wait till they come up with the money, eventually. I don't think I could take the hair or food back! What would YOU do?

The reason the police are called for places that have already provided the service but are not paid is because the police have the authority to secure legal identification. Normally the patron will offer up some collateral such as their drivers license but not always. Sot he police can get the info in case the person was actually planning to commit fraud. In some jurisdiction the police will issue a minor theft summons and its dismissed prior to the court date with proof the debt was paid.
