I don't drink it that often, but it costs $1.79 at the local gas station. I get a 2 liter of name brand ginger ale about every 2 weeks or so, as kind of a sweet treat. It tastes like liquid candy. I stopped at another store the other day to buy some smokes, and they wanted 2.49 for a 2 liter. I was like .. wha.... that is more expensive than gasoline.
Coke and Pepsi are usually on sale on alternate weeks at the two different supermarkets in the area. The sale is usually $5.00 for 4 bottles ($1.25 each), and sometimes just $1 each. When they're not on sale, they're $1.85 each. Plus deposit of course. And state tax.
At the grocery store Dr. Pepper seems to always be on sale for 98 cents. Coke and Pepsi are usually $1 or $1.25. I think they're around 1.59 when not on sale, but there is always at least one brand on sale. Are you sure it was a 2 litter that was $2.49? That seems really high unless it was a specialty brand at Whole Foods or somewhere similar.
at convenience store-they are usually much higher than supermarkets
coke and pepsi 2 liter was 99 cents for years before two years ago- that was a price benchmark
now, most have backed off, and now its 1.29-1.59
the store brands and weight watchers and other value brands can be .79-1.09
the 20 oz pepsi or coke at a convenience store is around 1.59 plus deposit
some stores, like rite aid, walgreens and other non traditional grocery stores will often sell soda , milk and other items at cost, just to get people thru the door
at cumberland farms (convenience stores) their big gulp watered down soda-super-sized is only 69 cents
but they also have a supersize iced coffee for only a dollar -thats a good deal
I don't buy it that often -- I'll wait until it's around $1 if I do.
One thing that I noticed at my local Wawa (convenience store) -- COLD 2 liters are a lot more expensive than the same brand/same size bottles that are warm off the shelf!!

How do they do that? They would both have the same bar code. Do they feel the temperature of the soda, and add or subtract from the total based on how hot/cold it is?

it costs money to keep that soda cold,,, lots of electricity
I have seen this also, but then again, what does popcorn or water cost at the movie theater?
its all in timing and a captive audience- just choose not to buy
Regular price at the grocery store Coke is $1.38. Walmart has had the 2 liter Cokes for several weeks now at $1.00 each. Our grocery stores rotate Coke and Pepsi on sale at $.99 each.
Canadian Dry ginger ale & Cheerwine is usually $.99 or $1.00 at grocery stores and Walmart.
I don't buy drinks at convenience stores. They are too expensive.
