I recently made a purchase at Krogers grocery. I used my visa card and swiped it once and something happened (according to the clerk) and she went through the motions of voiding it. She asked me to swipe the card a second time and I thought it was taken care of. I just looked at my statement and I was charged twice for the item.

I saved the receipt just in case. Should I dispute it with my credit card or go down to the store and dispute it?

Go to the store, if they won't resolve it, THEN contact cc co.

I appreciate the advice. I wasn't sure which would be the best way to approach it.

Yep, Kroger is very good about these things. If you are contesting based on your monthly credit card statement, they may need to "verify" the mistake before issuing a credit but since you also have the receipt, the store manager's do have the authority to issue the credit if the evidence clearly shows it was their error. As and FYI, jokingly ask the manager if you get a free cake from the bakery for this; and don;t be surprise if they say sure grab one! (at least that's what happened to me when a mistake like this was made a year ago)

I have to hand it to Kroger. No hassle at all resolving the problem. The customer service desk clerk was great and the manager made an instant decision to correct the problem. This is the Shelbyville, TN store. I am a happy customer.

Most stores that I know of will happily remedy the issue if it is a problem on their end. Had this happen a couple years ago at a local shop here in town, when I asked about it the manager told me to give her a few hours to look into it. Not even an hour later I got called back to the shop to get my money back.

Glad it was an easy fix! I once had a store call me because I wasn't paying attention and had foolishly signed a receipt with an extra 0 at the end - $1100 instead of $110. They noticed and didn't even wait for me to figure it out when I saw my statement. They did a credit and then called me to let me know it was all taken care of.

It's nice to read another example of good customer service not being a lost art!

Filing a dispute is ALWAYS the last option. Never, ever, ever do that without first communicating with the merchant. 99% of the time, an honest mistake was made or there was some sort of misunderstanding, and the problem can be rectified quickly, easily and in a friendly manner.

Filing a dispute is signaling to the merchant that you think they did something dishonest, and by not talking to them first, you're telling them that you don't even trust them enough to talk about it before you dispute the charge.

Chargebacks also hurt merchants pretty badly, from a risk standpoint. It's harder for them to get a merchant account and the costs are higher when there are a bunch of chargebacks on their record.
