I went to Starbucks the other day for a venti vanilla latte and when the barista rung me up, I was surprised to be charged $5.03 for the 20 oz. drink. The price had gone up again. Going over the $5.00 mark made it mentally seem much more than when it was under $5.00 a few months ago when I last purchased the same beverage. Fortunately I don't go there often due to expense and not caring too much for the taste. But it's a nice change from drinking my drip Folgers at home almost every day. I think. Now I'm not so sure. Do you have any coffee alternatives, at home or otherwise? In Alaska, we have a lot of competition to Starbucks, but here, Starbucks has a lock on the java market. My home drip brew is good, but a change would be really nice.

There are MANY other brands. You could make really good coffee, at home.
There's no question that Starbuck's is overpriced. The problem is that if you want a good coffee drink (not just regular coffee), they have a monopoly on this in many areas - i.e., in most cases Starbucks is the only coffee bar you may see around.
Conversely, I was in Portland, OR & Seattle, WA on vacation back in June - though there were the ubiquitous Starbuck's all over, each city also had a lot of other smaller coffee places that I had never heard of in which the coffee was less expensive - and in some cases better - than Starbucks.

I don't frequent Starbucks as much as I used to... but I still go every now and then. I've never ran into a snob there. They're mostly average Americans... slightly higher population of students, artsy people, and business people.
