I am not a member of Amazon Prime, but I've always received the books and other products I order on Amazon in about 2-3 days. That is, as long as what I ordered was from Amazon itself and not a seller selling through Amazon, and as long as the item was marked "in stock" when I ordered it. I always order enough to qualify for free shipping.
But in the last 2 months, I've experienced looooonnnngggg delays in my deliveries. The conspiracy-theory part of my brain says they are doing this on purpose to try to get people to pay to join Amazon Prime. I've read the "benefits" of membership but none of them are worth it to me. I don't watch streaming videos or download music. But I sure did like getting my orders within a few days. They always said 5-8 business days, but I always got stuff in a couple of days. Once a book actually came the very next day! Now they seem to be taking every one of those 8 days, and in several cases in the last 2 months, they are taking much longer. I have an order from 9/17/15 that was only shipped today, 10/7/15, and is now in transit. That's unheard of unless something was out of stock, but these items were in stock.
Has anyone else experienced this?
I love Amazon, and yes, I know, if it's free shipping I probably should not complain. But they've gotten me accustomed to quick delivery over the years, now they seem to have pulled the carpet out from under my feet. But I refuse to pay money to join that stupid Amazon Prime!
Actually, both Fed Ex and UPS have taken to "outsourcing" the delivery of the package to the USPS. It's not just Amazon. I regularly buy some products from an online merchant and it usually takes about 7 days to get my product. Last order had to be replaced after 10 days because it got lost after they turned it over to the PO. Replacement order took about 2 weeks. It's frustrating.
We have Prime - mainly for streaming movies, but the free shipping is nice too since we buy a lot of stuff on Amazon, but even the Prime isn't immune to the new delivery method, so upgrading might not help that much.
I have Amazon Prime and have noticed this same problem lately. Merchandise isnt shipped nearly so quickly as it used to be -- and, now that Amazon is using the USPS so much, deliveries are delayed in transit as well.
Edited to add that, when UPS and FedEx deliver to the USPS for its subsequent delivery to your house, it's because Amazon chooses that delivery method. UPS and FedEx dont ever choose to use USPS on their own. The sellers choose it because it's cheaper -- and, of course, it's less reliable.
I'm finding that it's not the shipping company that's delaying but Amazon itself. An order placed 9/17 sat at Amazon until they finally marked it "shipped" on 10/7. I'll probably get it 10/9. It's the "sitting on the order before shipping" part that's frustrating me.
Yes, I CHOOSE free shipping, but the T&C for the free shipping still says 5-8 days. This is way over.
It is a first world problem. But da*& it, I want my stuff and I want it now. Everybody together:

I too have noticed this. I just reached out to Amazon yesterday on an order I placed 9/29 scheduled for delivery on 10/9 which had not been shipped. This morning I received an e-mail that my order has shipped via Amazon Logistics and that it will arrive by tomorrow 10/9.
I think the option with free shipping is that it allows Amazon to consolidate items into single shipments. I'm guessing the 3 items I ordered were all in stock in different fulfillment centers and Amazon shipped them all to the closest one to be in order to ship them all at once. Amazon is a smart company and if they are able to save $0.18 on overall transportation costs, they will.
I don't have Amazon prime, but mine always get here in like 2 days even though they estimate 5 days.
My last order (last week I believe) got here w/in 2-3 days. (don't have prime either)
