Also, a few stores, like Macy's, the sales associates have a sales goal they need to meet each day, and returns go against their goal. Many times they will start out a negative five or ten percent because someone returned items. It is well known that many people wear and return item, anyone can tell, but sales associates cannot say anything about it. Dresses for example are a popular item to do this with, so some Macy's stores have started putting large, unsightly tags on the dresses in which if they are removed, voids the return in which can only exchange or maybe a gift card.

Also, as a poster stated, they are logging down ID of people returning to spot serial returners. Some (maybe all?) Home Depots do this also.
