You could buy him a large stuffed animal. It's large enough for him to lay on and it's affordable.

Look online for something in his age group. There are a thousand choices. At two years, I would go with an age appropriate book and a stuffed animal from the story.

My son's favorite toy at 2. His is green.

He still uses it at 4, but he rides a 2 wheel bike, so he just uses it in the house. Very well built and still rolls smoothly. Now my 17 month old is eyeing it.

Does any kid actually like those things?

Neither of my children have anything to do with those things when they get them from random people who don't bother to think about what they would actually like. And I felt the same way when I was a kid. So did my brother and so did my wife.

It's like some weird cliche.

I am always very grateful when someone gets my kids clothes. It's very helpful and saves me the chore and usually they are pretty cool.

Clothes are a great gift for the parents (clothing for the child I mean) - not so much to the ACTUAL kid! LOL
