what is the wacky-est sales tactic someone has used to get you to switch to their electric company.

usually the person will knock on the door and say something like "we are the utility company" (never specifying which utility company -- i guess so the home owner assumes its their utility company and opens the door).

sometimes i get something like: "did you get the notice in your bill; the company sent me out here to make sure you are no longer in default. they were supposed to call you but since i'm here i need to see your bill in order to correct late charges...".
- if you are truly from my utility company then you wouldnt you already be able to get a copy of my bill ?

the weirdest one i got was: "i work for the government, they sent us out to review peoples energy bills to make sure you're not being overcharged."
- the department of energy is spending millions by sending people door-to-door in order to save me a few bucks on my electric bill ?

the latest one i got i think they were trying to make a metaphor about their company being like the geek squad to bestbuy.

others ?

yup. mid-atlantic. started happening around 5 years ago. surprised its not more common (maybe its banned in certain states). they come out like an army onto the street. about twenty of them in pairs. companies like constellation enrgy, direct energy, home hero, igs energy, ... they sometimes wear hard hats/ reflective jackets to make it look like they need to climb a pole or look at your wiring... but when you open the door they ask to see your utility bill and they can save you money.

scammy.

Never happens here. No reason, as we only have one possible supplier in each category, for electric, gas, Internet, Phone.

We are not perfect for regular phone company which we cancelled, as we want to always have a land line. However the land line we use is VOIP, off of the Internet. We use NetTalk. Black box plugs into the modem, and main phone into that, with handsets around the house. Cost $3.75 per month paid annually, for unlimited calling anywhere in the U.S. and Canada, plus plenty of other extras. Even sounds better than the regular phone service. When we travel, we take our box and one phone along. Plug it into the computer, connect to WiFi and we have the same phone service anywhere we go.

So you can see, we like the lowest cost good service, but we have no choice with the rest. So we never have anyone trying to get us to switch services.

Life expectancy of door-to-door salesmen in rural Alabama is pretty short.
