I agree...
If you look at your receipt from almost any store, there is quite likely a survey request on there. Just go online or call a certain number, take the survey, and you will be entered into a drawing for some wonderful prize (perhaps a $500 shopping spree at that store). Of course, your chances of winning that prize are practically non-existent.
But if you don't do the survey, you definitely will not win!
That is one reason we cancelled our landline.
Most of the ones I get are on the receipt rather than robo-dials or e-mails. Maybe I get website pop-up survey. I'll typically do the survey when I have a really bad experience at the store.
Technically, only the results of a bad experience is worth anything to a company looking for a survey. If I have a fantastic experience, and give 5 stars to all the questions, what use is that? Sure, the co can boast the number of satisfied customers, but that's all fluff anyway.
But if ten people are surveyed, and all ten give 5 stars to all depts except for Sales, and Sales gets an avg of 2 stars, that info should be very valuable to that company. They know where they need to do work.
Anyway, my point is that lately it seems we're being surveyed to death. I must've been asked to fill out 10 surveys in the last week or so. And if I don't, I get "reminded" that my survey is very valuable.
How 'bout this - if you don't hear from me, ya got 5 stars.

Yes, and alternatively, give them a bad review based on them bothering you about taking their annoying survey. We don't answer the land line unless the caller id is recognized as someone we want to talk to, but we get a lot of email surveys. For restaurants and hotels, I will respond, and also do reviews on Yelp and Tripadvisor, to help others.
curious how i erroneously mix up my home phone number with the number of a telemarketer when i am asked for it...
lol!
