I don't think they want to compete with Sears so much as supplant them, to be left standing when Sears inevitably folds up. They likely believe that Sears is in such a dire situation that they are no longer competitive. I always thought Sears's strength in home appliances was what drove JCP out of that area in the first place. JCP's rise from the dead in the past two years or so is likely at the expense of Sears, and to a lesser extent Macy's, which is also having problems. Many malls have those three as anchor stores, and if JCP is the last of the three still standing, then they will benefit from all the foot traffic that would have been going to those other two.
^^ Wow you think JCP could out last Macy's???
Thought JCP is doing better -- it's not out of the woods yet itself is it?
If what's shown in those Sears photos in that link are reality, then THAT is sadder than sad. I don't' even know what to say about walking through a store with THAT limited an inventory, and utterly empty floor space.
I haven't been in my local Sears in about four years. It wasn't THAT bad. Those photos, yikes.
True - it's just a test to see if they can sell them.
The CEO of Penny's is Marvin Ellison who oversaw the introduction of appliances at Home Depot when he was there.
IMHO, it's not going to work. Home Depot and Lowe's are the two biggest appliance dealers in the country with Sears a distant third. Yes, 1/3 of Penny customers do buy appliances at the mall but 2/3rds don't. Can Penny's really compete with Big Orange and Big Blue? I can get to 5 of those quicker than I can to a Penny's and this is in metro Boston.
Other places already compete with Lowe's and Home Depot.
Personally, I only buy appliances locally... never from those two.
I may go there to price compare, but I always do better with a non-big box store.
I'll bump this one up. Was in JCP today. They've taken a huge part of the store and walled it off and made a huge high-end cosmetics shop. Similar to what Macy's has. But ours did this in a smaller store and everything now is so crowded, the clothes are crowded and aisles are smaller. It wasn't a happy shopping experience.
And speaking of changes, I went into Sears also and now they have a small department of furniture. A few kitchen tables, and that booth corner table/bench thing I've seen for years and years. Too bad they don't still make their own Kenmore appliances. Those things used to last forever. DH was in Sears a few days ago looking at the tools and he came out saying whoever puts together their sets has no idea what they're doing.
I think I miss the old days.
