I am having a difficult time trying to get this question answered even on google. Since it relates to equipment, I for the kitchen I will give it a try in this thread.

I fell and broke my left hand metacarpal (between wrist and finger) and as a result of the casting and immobility my grip is very weak in all but my thumb and index finger despite intensive therapy.

I dislike electric can openers because I don't want clutter on my counter. I can grip the can opener with those two fingers but it is very awkward to say the least. I currently have a swing a way can opener. DH bought me a Tornado battery operated one but if thee is even the slightest irregularity or bump it is useless.

What I am looking for is a can opener that "locks" on the can and you can simply guide it. I have seen the videos of OXO's, Tfal, Zyliss and Williams Sonoma openers.

Does anyone have actual experience with any of these.? Many thanks.

I've never tried one. But here's a couple to consider from Amazon that have good reviews. They aren't expensive and are Easily returned if you don't like it.

Sorry to hear about the injury.

Thanks to both of you. Yes, it was my own fault I didn't realize I had cut short the walkway and fell over a concrete flower basket. I am beyond lucky that I didn't break more than my hand as I easily could have.

I have seen the amazon reviews but was hoping that someone would have actually experience with one to recommend. IF I have to I will pick one of them and give it a try. Again thanks so much for taking the time.

With your hand in the condition it's in you may need to get use to counter clutter. Surely you can make a tiny space for this slimline opener.

We've had excellent luck with ours and it's a side cutter. Good luck with your hand.

Thanks but not only do I not want a electric opener, we don't use much in the way of canned products so the request is really for when DH is not at home and I am needing to open a can of something. Maybe dog food or soup.

This one only lasts about a year at a time but works fantastically.

Since this is the Recipe subforum, this isn't the appropriate place for this thread. I am going to move it to the Shopping forum.

Best of luck to you.
