I do that. That food isn't "presumed" to be a newer date, it IS a newer date. If there are produce/meat/perishables that are fresher on the shelf, I'll buy those instead of the ones that are almost expired. Even if I have to reach to the back of the stack to get them. Because there IS something wrong with the one up front. It's not fresh. And you can often spot it visually, and it's obvious. If it's a bagged salad, it's often brown and unappealing even before the "sell by" date.

A friend of mine worked in a grocery store and said the same thing.
Also, the ones in the front are often the "go-backs"...and it could have been sitting out, unrefrigerated, for HOURS.
Avocados here are about $3 each in the grocery store, imported from California or Mexico, while 100,000 TONS of locally grown avocados are discarded every year.
I have my own trees, get them from friends (varieties fruit in different seasons), or, rarely, buy them at the farmers market. Or I do without.
Going to the mainland is always mindblowing; produce is so cheap, abundant, varied! I really miss stone fruit!
