A friend of mine worked in a grocery store and said the same thing.

Also, the ones in the front are often the "go-backs"...and it could have been sitting out, unrefrigerated, for HOURS.

Avocados here are about $3 each in the grocery store, imported from California or Mexico, while 100,000 TONS of locally grown avocados are discarded every year.

I have my own trees, get them from friends (varieties fruit in different seasons), or, rarely, buy them at the farmers market. Or I do without.

Going to the mainland is always mindblowing; produce is so cheap, abundant, varied! I really miss stone fruit!
