I have a new sweater that says "Do Not Dry Clean" but instead only machine wash. I ripped the tags off so I'm concerned I will forget months later down the road. What would happen if I dry clean it?
My guess is that the cleaner would reject it, for fear of damaging other clothes in that load. If the label was in it, it would get a regular wash (at least at the cleaner that used to be next to where I worked).
Clothes that are labeled do not dry clean can have this for a couple of reasons. One reason is the dye. Some dyes can be removed completely. A dark green can turn pale green or whatever color is the basic color.
Other issues arise when some fabrics contain a bonding agent, like pleather -2 different fabrics glued together, or they have beads that will melt, or prints that will disappear. Many decorative sewn items are not Dry Cleanable.
