Has anyone stumbled up fake online stores? Someone showed me the following website. He said he was looking for a pair boots and the search led him to the website. He signed in and provided all info to place order, and after submitting credit card info, the process aborted. I've never heard of the site. The site doesn't have any info about the seller, does look odd: http://www.seminorvege.com/
I don't doubt there are many fake online stores--I'm not talking about legitimate stores ripping off buyers' money, but that the store is simply fake, does not operate, but was set up for the sole purpose of getting people's personal info and credit card numbers.
Yes, fraudulent sites exist. Yes, good to be leary and double-check.
One easy place you can check for customer reviews is SiteJabber. You can see if anyone has used the site, good or bad.
An additional thing I personally do is check the domain name to see how long it's been around (because I'm technical like that). You can check WHOIS, like the GoDaddy service. Just enter the domain name (like "city-data.com") and you'll get details about the website - who owns it, when it was created, etc.
For example, when I check it for the site you listed above, I'll see an entry like: Creation Date: 2018-01-23
This tells me they haven't been around very long, which makes me uneasy.
They have cute, current stuff that you I want to buy, but I guess I won't now! Has anyone had success w/ buying from them?
I would trust all those SiteJabber reviews, and skip it!
Website is only a year old, so they haven't been around long. And it's registered in China.
Here's another thing I check when looking at questionable sites. Go to the "About Us" page. Copy some of the text, and search it in Google. (for example "the very latest in compelling designs for the fashionably hip") If the exact same text appears on a bunch of other websites, they are a fly-by-night operation that essentially has mimicked another website.
You can also look for a Contact Us address. Search that on maps, see if it really seems to be a legit business at a legit location.
There is a reason those prices seem too-good-to-be-true!
One other resource if there is a physical address is the area Better Business Bureau. There is a plasma cut steel company in Huntsville that has a large online presence that looks wonderful, but it also has over 360 reported complaints over the past three years at the BBB. Figure that maybe one person in ten reports their complaint to a BBB, and that is a damning figure.
What if you look up that a retailer site is suspicious, HOWEVER, they also have the retailer on Amazon in which people seem pretty satisfied there? Is it safe to order via Amazon then? Here's one that I'm referring to...Chic Wish:
They are ALL OVER Facebook, selling quilts - photos snagged from etsy.
