So, it turns out that maybe we don’t need a mattress store on every street corner.

It’s been sad seeing traditional retail struggle in the last couple of decades, but the growth of this one seemed kind of bizarre.

I would not be surprised if Mattress Firm closed completely. Most retailers are successful with one store in a trade area. Mattress Firm went overboard with dozens of store locations in specific trade areas.

It is very bizarre.

Meanwhile on my coast, they bought out Sleep Country USA (maybe also SC Canada?) and Sleep Train and rebranded them all as Mattress Firm. One part of town had both in complexes across the road and both are now MF, essentially competing against itself. They did themselves in by being too big for the market they're trying to serve. They became too big to *not* fail.

One of my cousins came over here from England for the first time about 10 years ago. The first thing he noticed about the Potland area was all the mattress stores (SC, Sleep Train, Select Comfort, Mattress World etc.). I don't know what it is about this place, if northwesterners are really THAT sleep-deprived or if mattresses are just cheaper and more plentiful out here.

Just $0.039 worth from a lifelong resident of the Mattress Capitol of the World.

I've been waiting eagerly for Starbucks' inevitable collapse under its own weight for years now.

Oh, it's the same way here! The Metro is literally over-saturated with them, to the point that we joke about how ridiculous it seems.

It all kind of started during the "bed boom" of the late 90s, Sunny kind of started that snowball rolling down the hill. I think it kind of all got started out here then headed your way. Unlike coffee though, beds are not an everyday purchase, for most people anyways. The market can oversaturate VERY easily if left to spiral out of control as we're seeing happen.

It's so fragile. It's really all based on speculation. All it takes is for the economy to take another huge dump and people to not buy furniture often enough for these places to stay afloat. People start losing their jobs or taking pay cuts, no money to pump into the furniture market, bed shops close. Yet I still can't figure out for the life of me how they all managed to survive the last big depression in the 2000s.

I've seen Mattress Firm stores directly across the street from one another.

Here’s the list of Georgia stores scheduled to close. None in Atlanta are on the list, but I did notice recently that the store on the west side of the street across from Edgewood closed. The one on the east side remains. This could be like Sears though, which from what I read, could meet its demise in the next couple of days. Closing 700 stores looks like it may be the beginning of the end for Mattress Firm.

I’ve bought several mattresses over the past 5 years. None from a mattress store. Most came to my door in a box.

From what I read in this thread, it seems they bought up the competition, which resulted in too many stores too close together, and are now closing a bunch of them.

Sounds like good business.
