We need a new fridge and the only feature I really care about is high quality ice!

I know a dedicated ice maker is the best answer, but we don't have a spot for that so is there a fridge out there that makes decent clear ice? Water is supplied from reverse osmosis so no issue with water quality.

I've not had any problems with the icemakers in two LG fridges. Consistent sized 'cubes'.

What do you mean by high quality ice? I thought if it's frozen, it's ice. Are you serious?

We have a new LG ThinQ fridge, and it makes regular cubed ice and also these really cool big ice balls. They're bigger than a golf ball but smaller than a tennis ball. So they look fun, and they cool your drink, but they don't melt fast and water it down.

The quality of your ice cubes comes from your water input and a clean filter, not the brand of refrigerator. The size and shape of the ice cubes is what's different in the various branded refrigerators.

I bought a new Whirlpool fridge, range and dishwasher in a kitchen remodel. The range died in under a year.

The icemaker quit in a year and a half. I spent $500 so far on repairs with 5 service calls and it still doesn't work. Milk goes bad early in the door storage and soda cans explode from freezing in several spots in the refrigerator.

Don't buy Whirlpool!

The key to good freezer ice, other than what has been covered already, is freshness. It picks up flavors just like anything else. Most of the icemakers are primarily plastic, which is a good thing if you remember the metallic taste from aluminum.

I stopped using/installing the ice maker that comes w/the fridge. Issues w/it as well as the water taste. I let water run in the kitchen sink for a awhile and then fill ice trays (I like the OXO ones w/a cover and you can stack them, they also keep out residual taste but I honestly only use ice for packing things when traveling, beer/soda coolers, etc.).

Last month my 10 yo LG french door bit the dust, but the ice maker never failed in all those years.
I had a Samsung on order but quickly cancelled when my sister told me her 2016 model was a terrible disappointment because the middle 'freezer' tray turned into a cold fridge and the icemaker needed a monthly blow-dryer treatment to free up the clogs!
No bueno.

After a couple of weeks living out of a cooler I soon realized that the freezer was what I missed most so I selected the three door LG with door-in-door and ThinQ ice system with the optional craft ice maker like ClaraC describes. I was pretty sceptical but after 24-48 hours these three wonderful balls of clear ice about the size of a small plum emerged with a tiny flat bottom. I LOVE THEM!

Of course, I use them selectively because ice goes like crazy here in FL so the main door ice machine is the regular 'go to' unit. Now I have a lovely collection of 20-24 balls which fills the bin so I set the craft machine to 'OFF' until I need more.

Occasionally I'll open the door unit to bang the cube box loose, but I'm used to that.
It's only been a month but so far I'm very, very, pleased.

I get ice just fine with my French door Samsung fridge. However the inside lettering has worn off and the plastic handles on the vegetable drawers have cracked. It is also very hard to clean. For those reasons, I would not recommend.
