It looks like Amazon has lowered their minimum purchase for Same-Day Delivery to $25 for Prime members. I'm surprised there was no formal announcement for this change.

It looks like the war between Amazon and Walmart is heating up.

I remember in 2020 for a brief period during the height of the pandemic Amazon was waiving the minimum for same-day delivery for Prime members. With the price increase for Prime, this is a nice added perk by making more items same-day delivery eligible.

Not sure about that, it seems to be available only for select metro areas:
Amazon Prime members shipping to select metro areas across the US can choose to receive FREE Same-Day Delivery on a broad selection of items.
And:
Only residential addresses are eligible for Same-Day Delivery. Commercial addresses, P.O. Boxes, APO, FPO, and DPO addresses aren't eligible.

Other than that, it is available for two-day shipping:

I get plenty of items that are one-day shipping eligible, without a minimum purchase. This has been the case since spring 2019. The same-day delivery over $25 is new (it used to be $35).

Remember for same-day delivery there has to be a nearby warehouse in your area, so smaller cities and rural areas are not eligible.

Amazon keeps its shipment costs low by keeping its most popular items closer to where customers buy them, that way Amazon avoids having to use more expensive air transportation for its most popular items.

Yes me too, and I’m in semi rural area. I’ve ordered things at 6pm that get delivered at 4am. If you don’t have enough to qualify for same or one day they offer it to you for $2.99 at checkout. I did that when my honeys work knee pads got stolen on a job site, and he had them for work the next morning.

Oh, yeah. Modern slavery. The (often irrational) demand is huge. Some people want their stuff delivered in an hour or less. The Amazonification of logistics has created a new group of highly exploited workers: delivery drivers.
The working conditions facing Amazon’s last-mile drivers are defined by a frantic pace, low wages, surveillance, stress, no bathrooms, and relentless pressure to meet tight delivery deadlines.
All those who want their stupid purse, videogame, toy or pair of socks delivered in a day or less, should read this.

I was wondering why everything I order with next day delivery seems to take 2-3 days.

Did you have a high enough total? If you buy something for $11.99 and it says "next day delivery" it always has the caveat "with $25 of eligible items" or something similar.

Typically, where I live this is only the case for items that are extremely cheap, and generally is for more obscure items. Most items I can get next day without a minimum if they are available in a nearby warehouse (either local or in a neighboring state). The $25 minimum is for same-day delivery in most cases where I live.
