On supermarket shelf I saw spaghetti sauces priced from $2 (Ralph's) all the way to $10 (GAO); same volume bottle. In between are other familiar brands like Ragu, Prego, Newman, etc.
I am wondering if there is really anything that justify 5X the price? I know GAO seems to be a trendy product; my wife says it's the best. But I don't seem to detect any more superior quality, let alone 5X the quality.
With any sauce I typically still sautee onion and garlic, then add salt and a little sugar. All sauces come out good.
I've never tried GAO but I have tried Rao's as a part of a low carb diet. The less expensive brands tend to have a fair amount of sugar.
My favorite spaghetti sauce is Rao's Italian sausage and mushroom. It tends to be less expensive at Walmart than it is at the grocery store. If I see it on sale, I stock up.

haha I meant RAO. So as a fan, what do you like about this sauce? Do you feel its flavor is that much better than other brands?

Rao's is less sweet and more fresh tasting to me. The pieces of sausage and mushroom are substantial, like something you would make at home. In some of the less expensive brands, there might be diced bits of mushroom and meat.
A lot of it for me is the lower sugar. I started cutting the unnecessary sugar out of my diet years ago and I've lost my taste for sugary sweet tastes in my food In fact, I avoid starchy foods, too, so I use Miracle noodles instead of regular pasta.
I'd go for the Newman's Own. I've seen some of the labels that stated "no sugar", but I don't know if that's all of them. Sometimes my local grocery store has it [Newman's Own] and sometimes not. I've seen the Rao's brand on their shelves lately a lot too. I've picked it up once but then hubby rallies against it - mostly due to the price. If it's only Ragu or Rao's on the shelves, he's going to pick up the Ragu one. He'll even add a bit of water to the bottle. The consistency thins more too. I know that doesn't bother him but I do prefer my sauce to be a thicker one.
I suppose I could get adventurous and make my own. Wish tomatoes would grow better for me. Last year was terrible. I could see him saying look how much more stuff you have to put in the cart. I usually have at least half of an onion at home compared to the tomato. No green thumb here. Maybe, someday?
Some sauce closer to $5.00 than one which is closer to $10?

Like other said ingredients. More quality ingredients, less fillers the price goes up.
Years ago it was Prego vs Ragu. Remember these commercials?
It took one jar to rid the house of Ragu. Fast forward 25-30yrs Ragu has improved. Now it's not
Prego vs Ragu, instead it's Prego or Ragu.
Which brand has the flavor of sauce(s) I want on sale?
But throw in all the other brands to choose from and it gets daunting.
Rinaldi
Hunts (can)
PiCs
Great Value
Prego
Ragu
Newman's Own
Classico
Bertolli
Barilla
RANA
RAO's
Mezzetta
Victoria
Botticelli
$ - Rinaldi or Hunts (can)
$$ - PiCs or Great Value or Prego or Ragu or Newman's Own or Classico or Bertolli or Barilla
$$$ - RANA or RAO's or Mezzetta or Victoria or Botticelli
Taste wise they all have good sauce(s). It's just the matter of the flavor, style of sauce you want.
Which sauce is worth their price? That's a matter of opinion.
For me I choose by cost. Which brand has the flavor of sauce(s) I want on sale?
