As an ex-grocery store employee, all I gotta say is that it's kind of jerk thing to do and to do your grocery shopping after 10 p.m., as I do. No lines. None. Promise.
Besides, if the store is that slammed, I doubt any of the employees are going to notice that your cart is abondoned. If it go's unnoticed too long -- depending on the store's policy -- all perishables will be "shrinked", rendering them unsellable. That causes waste. Waste cuts into the store's bottom like. It will eventually cut into your pocketbook if it happens too often and forces the store to start raising prices to make up the lost goods.
If you really wanna ditch your cart, give it to an employee and make up some BS excuse. They won't care. Promise.
