Kudos to you ScranBarre - and always make it a point to say and point out specific things/times YOU have sold items. I see this situation from both sides, I do see employees who are just there to get the hourly, I also see good employees: I see customers who think they walk on water and I see customers who truly appreciate help.
Actually the past 3 days I've received some good customer service. I believe it was because I was the only customer in the store, and the worker bees were bored, because they had no customers from not giving service to previous customers.
So the secret is, when you pull up in front of a store, and there are no cars parked there, then they are all alone inside and maybe want some company to talk to, so your chances are good at getting some service.

I notice this a lot at the Pier 1 Imports near my home. There's often nary a car in the parking lot besides that of an employee or two. When someone enters the store they are lambasted with exceptional service.

Come to think of it, the new Brookstone in the casino here also offers great customer service. I love that place!
For the jobs that are minimum wage, I expect minimal customer service. Customer service has a price and most people with good customer service skills are not going to accept minimum wage. They move on. The one's you see working minimum wage jobs are basically the bottom of the labor barrel. There may be some who are really intent on providing decent customer service but they won't stay there long.
I don't think that is any excuse for crappy customer service. Being kind, friendly and helpful is free. Either you have it in you or you don't.
I'm tired of horrible customer service due to outsourcing call centers and you end up with people who you can't understand and they just go off a script.
The worst type of too much customer service is when you go to a car dealer. I can't stand it when I pull into the lot and there's 5 salesmen standing outside the door. The assault on you and your personal space is disgusting. It's like a mob descending on you - they think they have a live one. What ticks them off is when you ask directions to the parts counter.
I once went to a dealership to ask a few questions about a car and observed this scene. I drove out without stopping since I just didn't want to deal with that situation.
What about calling a company and actually trying to speak to a "live" person and not a machine.
That's another one of my pet peeves. You try to do #0 or *0 to get through all the voice prompt BS and get to a live person. I'm amazed at how many companies put so many road blocks in your way to prevent you from talking to a live person. Even if you go on their web site to get contact information, it can be challenging to get a phone number - it's like they are at war with their customers.
The store where I work has these nice windowbox style planters out front with a nice range of flowers. They're lined with that straw stuff... not a great description, I know, but it's early. Anyway, I looked outside yesterday and noticed some smoke, went and took a look, bringing my water bottle, and saw that someone had left a cigarrette burning on the planter and it had burned down low enough that it was catching the straw on fire--at least it was smoldering. I dowsed it, picked out the blackened straw...threw away the cigarrette, and went back inside. A few minutes later this lady who had just left came back in screaming that there was a wet spot where she left her cig and somebody was fuggin with her, and we owed her a pack of cigs...

Well of course they approach you, that's how they make their living. You pull into THEIR lot.
Alot of "shoppers" forget that when you have no intention of buying a vehicle but are just out killing time, you are wasting that salespersons time too. He/she could have a real customer, earn some money for their family, but instead they are stuck with a customer just there to spend the afternoon looking at cars (why the heck that would be fun to someone is beyond me but it happens)
I used to work in car dealerships (office side) but customers who come in with no intention to buy usually have a "holier than thou" attitude.
Obviously, you didn't really want to purchase a vehicle since you drove away when you were approached by a salesperson.
