Its funny, we were just in Walmart and I aksed my dh about layaway. I didn't realize that they did away with it awhile back. I said that I would love to put stuff in layaway this year for Christmas. I guess we will check out Kmart. Why not use it?

we're going to be using it for sure this year w/ kmart. I bet walmart could put so many stores out of business if they brought it back.
Ross has layaway also. Also, Burlington Coat Factory, T.J. Maxx, and K.B. Toys all have layaway.

Not only that, but you're also able to make sure that the item you wanted is there for you no matter what and you don't have to fight crowds to do it, or worry that by the time you saved the money up, the item would be gone.

When my children were young I use to put stuff on layaway at christmas. It was a great way to store gifts away from little peeping snoops. I think it's a great service for stores to offer. Helps to keep people on a budget without missing out on the item. It is unfortunate though, a lot of stores have done away with the layaway program but it is starting to make a come back-Sign of the times.

Yes, they removed it a couple of years ago, I suppose to try to "re-invent" themselves as a competitor of Target and one of many steps in acheiving more of an upscale business model.
Wise move? Probably not, as they more than likely alienated a lot of longtime shoppers.Who knows?..Maybe they will bring it back with the current bad economy.

Hi first post here, just found this by googling stores still doing lay a way
I was happy to find that K-Mart does it, I know that they are going to get a lot of my holiday shopping business this year because of it. I'd much rather pay cash with no interest for something than put it on a credit card.
That's one reason so many people are in debt. This I have to have it now instant gratification mentality, it's financially destructive. I've always used lay a way for holiday shopping and school clothes shopping for my kids and was very sad to see it fade away a few years ago..our K-mart didn't even have it. Now with the way things are, I can't imagine a better business move than to bring it back...if Wal Mart and Target were smart they'd do it...I'm sure that the business they'd attract would more than make up for what items they'd have to return because someone didn't pick it up...and I find it very hard to believe that things put away in September are no longer useful in January...or so out of date that they can't be put on sale at the very least. That is a ridiculous excuse if you think about it. Most of the places that used lay away didn't allow more than a few months.
And yes, it sounds logical to put that 20 bucks away into the bank but most of us know that if the cash is on hand it gets spent on something else, this way, it's like you've another bill that must be paid and you do it. I think it's one of the best ways to shop and am going to be putting my kids christmas stuff on lay away this week.
