What are you doing for
Since I'm thinking about the holidays coming up, I was wondering...
What charity / activity are you planning on doing this winter to help out someone less fortunate?
I have actually dressed as Santa before and visited kids that may not have received any gifts. If you need ideas btw, I know that Burlington Coat Factory is doing a winter coat drive.
You might remember it from the today show last year and it got me thinking...even if you don't have much time, or $$, everyone has an older coat in the back of the closet that they don't use anymore! Easy - yet effective - my favorite type of gift

This year, my husband and I, will be serving Thanksgiving Dinner at a homeless shelter nearby that we donate all of our clothes and baby stuff to.

We always donate money to our local AIDS charity this time of year. My kids will also spend part of their allowance on buying canned goods for their schools' food drives.
We hope to donate our time and talents somewhere, too, but haven't decided where.

We donate to local charities and organizations that serve the elderly. This time of year everybody focuses on kids and the older folks tend to be forgotten.

It's pretty cool to see how everyone is getting involved. It's important to me all year round, but at holiday time I can't think of a better way to spend my time.
Just wanted to ask a question of you all...I am new to helping spread the word about charitable things, and I'm working with Burlington Coat Factory to help them develop this coat drive. And I am interested in learning how you find out about charity-related events.
So how do you learn about them? i.e. from friends, neighbors, reading it online or in town newsletter, etc.

I hear about a lot of things from my kids schools. Or friends who are involved. Periodically, I see something in the newspaper.
My son's scout group just had a can drive for a local church, which I helped out with and donated to. That's about all I am doing right now, unless someone asks me for a cash donation.
We think about other people and charities all year long, not just at this time of year.
Plus, I've got enough people I know that are in real need.

We plan to donate to the local food bank that helps out the regional area. We can still afford to eat thankfully and want to help those that can't and I know local charities are hurting.

I have some new toys saved for Toys for Tots and I'll be donating some food to the local food bank as well. Haven't looked into volunteering for the soup kitchen but will do that as well.
